During the last part of the Holistic Health Show, I will share my lung cancer treatment with you following a prognosis of 6 months to live by my physician 33 years ago. Refusing surgery and chemotherapy with such a prognosis I instead elected to use an alternative holistic approach. This was not only successful in facilitating my recovery but now at age 77 I have no chronic illnesses or prescribed medications (the average for my age is 3 chronic illnesses and 5 prescribed medications). I believe you can achieve similar results to mine and that is the goal of this show.
I am a registered nurse with two masters in public health and wellness (U. of California and Johns Hopkins U), and a doctorate in public health (Johns Hopkins U). I have 57 years experience as a nurse practitioner, author, educator, and researcher. During this time, I published 7 books, 55 articles, gave 58 research papers around the United States and Europe, received research grants up to $800,000, and served on national committees. I received multiple awards and recognitions including the Distinquished Career Award in Public Health from the American Public Health Association. One of the guests, Mrs Linda Wilson, interviewed by Dr Carl O Helvie on the Holistic Health Show used the herbal tea Essiac, and Ave successfully in her recovery from kidney cancer.
Essiac Tea has been used since the early 1900′s. In 1922, Rene Caisse was told by one of her clients about her breast cancer recovery using what was later named essiac tea (caisse spelled backwards). It had been given to her by an Ojibwa Indian Medicine man 30 years earlier and was made from 4 herbs -sheep sorrel, burdock root, slippery elm bark, and turkey rhubarb root. When her aunt developed stomach cancer that had metastasized and her doctors gave up on her, Rene collected and brewed the herbal preparation and her aunt lived another 21 years. She continued using the preparation with her cancer clients and eventually started her own cancer clinic under the supervision of physicians who supported her work. She treated thousands of patients who traditional medicine had given up on and turned away.
Because most of her patients came as a last resort and were in advanced stages of cancer the treatment was not successful with everyone. For some it controlled the cancer, for others it mainly alleviated the pain. However, thousands of clients reported complete cures. In 1937 the Royal Canadian commission of Canada held hearings and concluded that Essiac was a cure for cancer.
Ava (in the U.S.A.) or Avemar (outside the U.S.A.) is also an older cancer treatment developed by a scientist in Hungary who was awarded the 1937 Nobel Prize in Medicine for describing the essential role of vitamin C in the life sustaining processes of cellular metabolism. This work has continued by scientists in Hungary who have refined an all natural produce by fermenting wheat germ with baker’s yeast. It is available as a once a day. pleasant tasting instant drink and is being studied and recommended by doctors around the world. Its advertised uses include: enhanced immune functioning, stimulating natural killer cells, increased energy, restore appetite, and replenish nutrients. It is advertised as useful for: colds and flu, cancer, malnutrition, eating disorders, and anemia.

In the past it has been common practice to remove both of a woman’s ovaries during a hysterectomy to eliminate the possibility of later ovarian cancer. Now researchers at St Johns Health Center in Santa Monica, California results question this practice because although it does decrease ovarian and breast cancers it also increases the risk of death. In “Ovarian Conservation at the Time of Hysterectomy and Long Term Health Outcomes in the Nurses’ Health Study” published in the May 2009 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology researchers questioned the practice because ovarian cancer has a low risk of about 3% and is responsible for less than 1% of all deaths among women. In their study they focused on a set of 29,380 women who had been followed for years of which 13,035 had hysterectomies without their ovaries removed, and 16,345 had hysterectomies with their ovaries removed. They evaluated deaths and incident events from coronary heart disease, stroke, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, total cancers, hip fractures, pulmonary embolus, and death from all causes. Women were separated into pre and post menopausal groups at the time of hysterectomies and those who had estrogen replacvement therapy were identified.
After adjusting for multiple independent risk factors, the researchers found the following trends: Removal of both ovaries was associated with a markedly lower risk of ovarian. breast cancer and overall cancer. However, they also had a higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer. They also had a higher risk of death from coronary heart disease, lung cancer and all cancers. The researchers concluded that at least one in every 24 women having her ovaries removed will die prematurely from any cause as a result of the procedure.
The death rate for women who did not have their ovaries removed was very low: 34 deaths out of 13,305 or 0.26%

Dr Lise Alscholer who was interviewed by Dr Carl O Helvie on the Holistic Health Show this week offers some good information on natural substances to alleviate stress in her book the Definitive Guide to Cancer: An Integrative Approach to Prevention, Treatment, and Healing.
Stress can be a destructive force in all of our lives and natural substances to relieve or alleviate it should be welcome by all. She says the following herbs and nutrients have been shown to possess anti-stress properties.
Siberian ginseng has a normalizing effect on body homeostasis and improves immune functions and overall well-being.
Panax ginseng should be used under the supervision of a health care profession to prevent overstimulation. However, it can improve immune functioning, physical stanima, and mental acuity, and also increase resistance to toxic environmental substances.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) “also known as Indian ginseng, protects against stress-induced ulceration, lowers chronically elevated cortisol, enhanses energy, reduces anxiety, and can counteract stress-induced hyperglycemia.”
Some specific nutrients identified include:
Vitamin C-”helps normalize levels of cortisol and ACTH” (another stress hormone) when severe stress is present.
“Vitamin B1-protects the adrenal glands from functional exhaustion. ”
“Vitamin B2-enhances adrenal function and helps regulate cortisol levels.”
“Alpha-lipoic acid-helps prevent toxic accumulation in tissues (caution with certain chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy.”
“L-tyrosine helps restore the ability to perform tasks under stress. ”

In his book 101 Exercises for the Soul Dr Bernie Siegel who was on the Holistic Health Show this week says “Maintaining a positive attitude, no matter what your circumstances, increases the likelihood of your finding future happiness and fufillment. Why is this true? Well, if your attitude is negative and your mind is filled with worry and fear, it takes its toll on your body, mind and spirit. In fact, by spending all of your time creating a vision of an unhappy future, you help create that future. Remember, your thoughts guide your decisions, and negative thoughts lead to negative decisions.” Bernie provides exercises that will help you overcome these negative thoughts that influence your actions and future so that you may have the best future possible. In other chapters he provides exercises for improving your body, mind and spirit. These are important exercises whether you are in good health or overcoming cancer.
