Risk of Aggressive Prostate Cancer linked to Common Sexual Infection

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

A new study from the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital reported on the September 9, 2009 Journal of the National Cancer Institute website reported a strong association between Trichomonas vaginalis, a common sexually transmitted infection, and the risk of advanced and lethal prostate cancer in men.
An important risk factor for prostate cancer is inflammation but the source has been unclear. Trichomonas vaginalis can infect the prostate and may be the source of inflammation.

A previous study found an association between Trichomonas Vaginalis infection and prostate cancer but was too small to determine if there was a link between the infection and advanced and lethal prostate disease. In the current stuidy researchers analyzed the blood samples from 673 men with prostate cancer and compared infection status based upon antibody levels with 673 control subjects who were not diagnosed with prostate cancer. The samples of blood were collected in 1982, on an average a decade before the cancer diagnoses.
Results showed that Trichomonas vaginalis infection was associated with over a two fold increase risk of prostate cancer that was at an advanced stage at diagnoses and a nearly three-fold increase in prostate cancer that would result in death. Further research is needed.

Melatonin-a potential Anti Cancer Hormone

Friday, September 18th, 2009

On Saturday, Dr Arlene Donar talked about melatonin as an anti-cancer hormone. Several studies suggest a connection between melatonin and cancer. Researchers at Harvard evaluated almost 150 women with invasive breast cancer and just over 290 without cancer as part of the Nurse Health Study. They measured the melatonin urine levels from morning samples and found that the women with the highest melatonin levels had the lowest risk of cancer.
In another study researchers used melatonin supplements with rats having advanced and untreated breast cancer . Given daily this significantly increased survival in the rats. They concluded that the results suggest that melatonin is beneficial in the survival with advanced breast cancer.
In a third study Mills et al at the McMasters University in Hamilton, Canada did a systematic review of randomized control trials and meta-analysis of melatonin in the treatment of cancer. They included 10 randomized controlled studies published between 1992 and 2003 that included 643 patients. and found that melatonin reduced the risk of death at 1 year and further, the effects were consistent across melatonin dose and type of cancer. No severe side effects were reported. They concluded that the substantial reduction in risk of death, low adverse events reported, and low cost related to this treatment suggests great potential for melatonin in the treatment of cancer.
These are a few of the studies published to date. Most researchers recognize the importance of further studies.

Mind Spirit Body Approach to Cancer Treatment Increases Cancer Survival Rates

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

In his discussion last Saturday of cancer treatment at the Oasis of Hope, Dr Francisco Contreras talked about the Integrative Regulatory Therapy at his hospital that integrates physical-mental-and spiritual aspects of health into the treatment plans and interventions for cancer patients. He also discussed how their success rate for various types of cancer survival were 2 to 15 times more successful than in other hospitals and attributes this success to the holistic focus.

There is ample research to substantiate the value of a holistic approach to health and illness recovery. Hundreds of studies have been completed on meditation and results show improvement in physical health such as reduced blood pressure, decreased need for medical care, decreased chronic pain, depression and anxiety, and increased mobility and activity among others. Another area researched is the influence of positive attitudes on physical health. In one study by Kamen-Siegel he found that optimism influenced the immune system in a positive way using a sample of 300 elderly people and Ranard found similar results in another study and concluded that hopeful people have a more robust immune system. Likewise, Friedman and ValdenBos found that enthusiastic people tended to be more resilient, self-healing people and that enthusiasm is correlated with recovery from illness. In another study Shekelle found that hostility had a negative effect on health.
Benson found that when under stress individuals experience increases in blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rates that strain the body and lower its immunity. On the other hand he also found that repeating a prayer, word, sound, phrase or movement such as in prayer, meditation, tai chi or yoga had a healthy effect.
Matthews and Clark say that in 75% of 325 studies reviewed the finding indicate that involvement in religious activities benefits health and well being.
These are just a few of the many studies that have looked at the effect of mental and spiritual activities on physical health and recovery from illness but support the results found by Dr Contreras in the recovery of cancer patients in his hospital.
In my own life I found this concept of holism to be true and demonstrated when I had lung cancer and was given 6 months to live—-33 years ago. I believe the holistic approach accounted for my recovery and continued good health.
