A recent study published in the September issue of Journal of Urology suggests that regular exercise may help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
The researchers at Duke University Medical Center studied 190 men who had a prostate biopsy and found that those who were moderately active such as walking at a moderate pace for several hours a week were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. As the amount of exercise increased the risk of cancer decreased. The study also found that for those men who developed prostate cancer it was less aggressive in those who exercised. Fifty eight percent of the men in the study were sedentary or exercised less that the equivalent of one hour weekly of easy walking. Other studies have found similar results but overall results can be confusing to the public. This study contributes to the ongoing research on exercise and prostate cancer risk.
