A research paper to be presented at the 2010 American Society of Clinical Oncology on June 7 and now online at www.ASCO.org concluded that breast and prostate cancer patients who exercise regularly before and after cancer treatment report a better quality of life and less fatigue. Researchers at Henry Ford Cancer Center and Henry Ford Heart and Vascular Institute developed a program known as ExCITE (Exercise and Cancer Integrative Therapies and Education). This program individualizes exercise programs for patients receiving cancer treatment and they can exercise at the Henry Ford Fitness Center or at home depending upon their stage of treatment treatment.
At present 30 female breast cancer patients and 20 prostate cancer patients between age 35 and 80 are part of the study. All were newly diagnoses when admitted to the study and were followed during and for 1 year following completion of their cancer treatment.
The patients exercise capacity, skeletal muscle strength and endurance were measured before the program started. In addition, general blood work, metabolic screens, bone density and inflammatory biomarkers were obtained before the program started.
Subjects were offered exercise and diet recommendations based upon their baseline exercise tolerance, weight, overall health and type of cancer treatment. For patients having hot flashes, nausea/vomiting, insomnia and neuropathy resulting from the cancer treatment acupuncture was used. Patients reported feeling better and having less fatigue as a result of the program that is ongoing.

In a study carried out at the University of Georgia researchers concluded that daily consumption of ginger eases muscle pain by 25%. In two studies 34 and 40 volunteers consumed capsules containing two grams of either raw or heated ginger or a placebo for 11 consecutive days. On the eighth day participants performed 18 extensions of the elbow flexors using a heavy weight in order to cause moderate muscle injury to the arm. The researchers assessed arm function, inflammation, pain and a biochemical seen in pain prior to and for three days after the exercises.
The study showed that daily ginger supplements reduced pain by 25% and the results were similar whether the ginger was raw or heat treated. More information is available at:

She also writes a blog called “Hypnotic Health” at www.hypnotichealth.blogdpot.com

Karen Hummel is a wellness coach whose passion is helping others with pain. She holds a masters degree in Health Service Management and a baccalaureate degree in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology. Karen is a Certified Personal Trainer with eighteen years of training experience and has served as a Wellness Director for several large corporations.

In 1998, after years of perseverance to reach her own fitness goal she was seriously injured in an automobile accident and told prior to surgery that she would almost certainly be a paraplegic. Karen refused to believe this and after three surgeries her surgeon told her that had it not been for the muscles she had developed from years of exercise she would not have walked away.
Several years later after excruciating pain, doctor’s visits, and medical tests, a piece of hardware from her original surgery was found to be piercing the spinal canal. This had caused tremendous nerve pain throughout her spine and eventually the loss of feeling in her right leg. Another surgery was scheduled but the chronic pain continued. One year later, testing found that a second device in her back had broken and the area had not healed properly., Karen had her last back surgery to correct the problem in 2006.
Karen has made tremendous improvements since her last surgery and is happy to be back at the gym, but still lives with chronic pain daily. She is in the process of writing a book about her experiences and hopes it will be an inspiration to others battling pain. More information is available at: http://www.karenhummel.com

Flaxseed Reduces Severity of Ovarian Cancer in Chickens

Friday, May 21st, 2010

logo1267406_md

Researchers at the University of Illinois reported in Gynecologic Oncology that hens fed a flaxseed-enriched diet for one year had a significantly lower rate of late-stage ovarian tumors than a control group that did not have the enriched diet. However, the hens fed the flaxseed-enriched diet did not have a lower incidence of ovarian cancer than the control group. These results are important because currently most women are stage 3 or 4 when diagnosed with ovarian cancer and “metastases that accompany late stage ovarian cancer are the main cause of death from the disease.” Thus, there is currently a high death rate from ovarian cancer. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of flaxseed in inhibiting the formation of colon, breast, skin, and lung cancer and testing flaxseed for ovarian cancer was a next step. These finding should lead to clinical trials with flaxseed as a chemosuppressant of ovarian cancer in women.

Combining Resistance Exercises and Blood Flow Restriction May increase Muscle Mass in Elderly

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

logo1267406_md

Researchers for a paper published in the May issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology studied 7 men with an average age of 70 who performed 4 minutes of low-resistance leg extension exercises both with and without inflatable cuffs that reduce blood flow out of the muscles. The researchers found that when the men put the cuff on, they responded like a young man to the exercises. The cuffs made light weights feel heavier and produced greater muscle mass in these men.

Researchers know that resistance weight exercises alone are effective against muscle loss that occurs during aging. However, older men receive less of a post exercise benefit than younger men and those with debilitating conditions are often unable to carry out resistant exercises. The researchers think this process (resistanc exercise and restricting blood flow) will help older men who need to bring their muscle mass back. They also say “it could be used for patients who have had surgery and aren’t capable of lifting enough weight to keep their muscles in shape, or for people who have arthritis or other conditions that make lifting heavy weights a problem.” For example, following ACL knee surgery when a person is unable to lift heavy weight, they could use a light weight with a restriction cuff to prevent muscle loss normally seen after knee surgery.

Treating Brain Cancer with Viruses

Friday, May 14th, 2010

logo1267406_md

Some parvoviruses have been shown to kill tumor cells without harming healthy tissue and have been tested previously in cancer therapy.

Using a particular parvovirus, the parvovirus H-1, researchers at the German Cancer Research Center studied with rats who received brain tumor cells by implantation. When the brain tumors reached a specific size the rodents were given parvoviruses either by direct injection into the tumor or into the blood stream. In rodents injected directly into the tumor the tumor shrank visibly after three days and disappeared in eight of the 12 rodents treated. They survived without any symptoms. The untreated rodent controls had severe disease symptoms within 3 weeks following the tumor implantation.
In the rodents who received injections into the blood stream six of nine rodents showed regression of the tumor and all treated rodents survived for one year with no signs of side effects.
There was no infection-related damage in the nervous tissue surrounding the tumor in the treated rodents and the virus did not spread to the whole organism. Parvovirus DNA was found in all organs after several days following transfer but that only lasted for a short time. Despite the viruses infecting healthy tissue they did not reproduce as they did in the tumor tissue where they reproduced and the viral protein production was detected. In rats that did not have tumors, the virus did not reproduce. The researchers concluded that the presence of cancer cells seem to be necessary for the parvovirus to reproduce. They believe these viruses are suitable for use in cancer treatment. More information is available at:

And Yet Another Benefit of Exercise-Delay Onset of Osteoporosis

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

logo1267406_md

Researchers reported at the American Physiological Society’s Experimental Biology 2010′s conference (April 24-28) that the stage for osteoporosis is set before menopause but exercise can forestall it. It is known that decreasing estrogen levels are associated with osteoporosis but it is now believed that bone density starts to decline years before this according to Joseph Cannon, Keller Chair in Allied Health Sciences and principal investigator of the National Institute of Aging-funded study .
Cannon hypothesized that higher levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) decrease bone mineral density by influencing the production of cytokines (regulatory proteins produced by white blood cells). The researchers were especially interested in one cytokine, interleukin-1, that signals certain cells to transform into osteoclasts that break down and resorb bone.
They measured FSH and bone mineral density in 36 women between ages 20 and 50 and correlated higher FSH with lower bone density. Incubating FSH with white blood cells isolated from the women, interleukin-1 was stimulated and higher circulating levels of interleukin-1 was correlated with lower bone mineral density. In addition, subjects who exercised more than 180 minutes a week had greater bone density. Thus, the study provided more evidence that exercise is important to maintain bone density and seems to promote inhibiting factors that keep interleukin-1 and bone breakdown under control. The researchers plan more research to determine the mechanism of how exercise influences interleukin-1.

Dr Carl O. Helvie, Host, Holistic Health Show will interview Frank Titus and Mitchell Yass on Saturday at 12 noon PST.

Frank Titus is a leading exercise therapist and pain management expert for over 16 years. After graduating with a B.S. degree in Exercise Physiology from Indiana State University in 1992, Frank worked as an Assistant Director at the Egoscue Method Clinic in San Diego, where he recognized that motion and exercise therapy modalities had higher success rates and longer-term benefits than other pain treatments. He then abandoned plans to continue on in physical therapy or chiropractics, and instead, became actively involved in popularizing spine and body alignment as the most effective ways of eliminating pain.

Titus Motion Therapy (TMT) has seen a success rate of over 95% in treating such painful chronic conditions as herniated disc, sciatica, whiplash, carpal tunnel, migraines, fibromyalgia, TMJ, rotator cuff injuries, degenerative joint disease, tennis elbow, ACL injuries, and arthritis. TMT is an eight week program utilizing specific, yet simple, exercises and motions to restore posture, balance and flexibility. The results is elimination of pain. Frank founded the Health Through Motion in 1995 where he offers Titus Motion Therapy and has personally treated high profile clients in the entertainment and sports worlds including Olympians, and PGA, NFL, PBA, ATP, AVP and NBA athletes. He also hosts the #1 talk radio show “The Painkillers” on 97.1 FM and was the only non Medical Doctor to appear on The American Health Journal an award winning television series on PBS. More information is available at: www.titusmotiontherapy.com

Mitchell Yass is a licensed physical therapist, author and founder of the Personalized Pain Resolution method. Already known as the “Miracle Worker” throughout Long Island, New York, he uses the Internet to solve America’s pain through downloadable videos offering exactly what one would experience during his in-person evaluations. Subjects of videos include Herniated Disc-Lumber (lower back), Herniated Disc-cervical (neck pain, and Sciatica.
Mitchell spent 15 years developing a method for identifying the cause of pain and for resolving it. His mission was to eliminate unnecessary surgeries, prevent prescription drug dependence and to allow his patients to resume a comfortable, active lifestyle. He has proven that in 90% to 95% of cases he has treated, the cause of pain is muscle weakness and imbalance and his pain diagnosis and treatment protocol eliminates his patient’s pain in just days or weeks.
