Prostate Cancer and Vitamin E

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Researchers at Queensland University of Technology report that the survival rate of those+ with prostate cancer may increase in the future due to a new vitamin E treatment. Because existing chemotherapy and hormone therapy treatments for prostate cancer do not kill the prostate cancer stem cells believed to cause the regrowth of prostate cancer, the researchers discovered a specific form of T3, called gamma tocotrienol (y-T3) that successfully kills prostate cancer stem cells and has the potential to inhibit the recurrence of prostate cancer. Using mice implanted with the prostate cancer cells and fed vitamin E in a 1 year study over 70% showed no cancer formations. In the remaining subjects of the experimental group tumor regrowth was considerably reduced and in the control group 100% of the subjects had tumor regrowth. Ovarian Cancer Risk Increased With Estrogen Replacement Therap

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

In a new study reported online last week in Cancer Research researchers at the University of Colorado reported that menopausal estrogen (E2) replacement therapy increased the risk of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive epithelial ovarian cancer and increases the likelihood of metastasizing to the lymph nodes. Using a mouse model to determine the effect of E2 on tumor risk the researchers found E2 “significantly increased the size, induced progesterone receptors and promoted node metastasis.” More information is available at: Spillman et al (2010) Tissue-Specific Pathways for Estrogen-Regulation of Ovarian Cancer Growth and Metastasis. This Saturday Dr Carl O Helvie, Host, Holistic Health Show continues the series on faith, spirituality and healing on BBS Radio at 12 noon PST (www.bbsradio.com) with three individuals who share their stories about how they have been healed as a result of their faith.

My first guest is Carolyn Jones (left). Lured to the San Francisco bay area by dreams of ocean sailing, Carolyn lived aboard a sailboat in the late 90’s. Eventually, she evolved from boater to landlubber, problem drinker to sober, married to single, nurse to author/photographer/publisher and finally from RV van living to homeowner. Carolyn traveled the western states and Mexico for three years while photographing dozens of gates; She has hundreds of images from her journeys. Currently, Carolyn is available to speak to a variety of audiences about the origin and birth of her book.

In addition to gates, Carolyn photographs colored light through cut-glass, producing vibrant and magical images. She won first prize for her image Down the Straightaway from guest’s gallery. Her abstract work is published in photo workshop’s book, Photos that inspire and photo and art’s Abstracts 2007: Volume Two. Color Burst was chosen for the back cover of Abstracts 2007: Volume Two and was awarded the curator’s choice award. More information is available at www.gatelady.com

My second guest is Richard Schooping. Richard awoke through AID’s and is now here sharing with the world that through love anything is possible, including healing of cancer and AID’s. He shares that many are passing from illnesses that may easily be reversed with right guidance. And so he is sharing with others the insights that he gained through immeasurable suffering with AID’s so that those who are suffering in any way will realize that there are choices that they can now make to alleviate their own suffering. He says that by becoming more knowledgeable of alternative therapies and becoming more aware we open up to new choices that not only address the symptoms of our dis-ease but more importantly address the root cause of our dis-ease. In his first book from suffering to soaring he shares his journey into, and of, and beyond AID’s. Richard is also a singer and songwriter and we will hear a song from his CD This song We sing. In this CD he shares songs of unconditional love, non-judgment, celebration of life, healing, peace, stillness and unity. His new CD Be Here Now celebrates this moment and the body. He has a video channel on you tube with live performances and music videos. More information is available at www.richardschooping.com

My last guest is Cheryl Peterson who all of her life felt connected to a whole being. Because she could not see this whole being she harnessed the power of faith in order to practice holistic well being. Through her research she discovered a positive trajectory of healing. And after being healer herself, she opened her own spiritual treatment center. There she provides workshops. More information is available at www.healingsciencetoday.,com

Bone Decay Linked to A Common Prostate Cancer Treatment

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

logo1267406_md

Research to be published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and reported on Science Digest concluded that androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), a common prostate cancer therapy, is associated with decay of the hard outer shell and the spongy inner mesh of bones. Because prostate cancer relies on male hormones for its growth, ADT that suppresses or blocks the production or action of these hormones.is commonly used.

Researchers followed 26 men with prostate cancer who were on ADT in a 12 months prospective observational study. At different times during the study period sex steroid levels, bone turnover markers, and bone mineral densities were taken. In addition, three dimensional high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) was used to assess bone structure changes. Results showed the decay mentioned earlier.

Increasing Vegetable Intake May Decrease Breast Cancer Risk in African-American Women

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology reported that African-American women who consumed more vegetables had a lower risk of breast cancer than those who ate fewer vegetables. Looking at data from the Black Women’s Health Study that followed 59,000 women investigators followed 51,928 of these women for 12 years. During that time 1,268 developed breast cancer and among those in whom hormone receptor status was known, 35% were estrogen receptor-negative/progesterone receptor negative (ER-/PR-) breast cancers. Comparing women who ate at least two vegetables a day with those who ate fewer than four vegetables a week, they found a 43% lower incidence of ER-/PR- breast cancer in the group who ate more vegetables. The prognosis of estrogen receptor-negative tumors are more likely among African American women than white women and carry a poorer prognosis than estrogen-receptor-positive tumors.

Certain vegetables may offer more protection according to the researchers. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, mustard and collard greens, and cabbage are sources of glucosinolates and may help reduce the risk by effecting estrogen metabolism and detoxification enzymes. Increased carrot consumption also was related to decreased risk of breast cancer possibly through their antioxidant properties.

Potential Method for Early Lung Cancer Screening

Friday, October 15th, 2010

logo1267406_md

In a study published in the online journal Cancer Research researchers from Northwestern University and North Shore University Health System reported a method for detecting early lung cancer by examining cheek cells using pioneering biophotonic technology. This optical technique is called partial wave spectroscopic (PWS) microscopy and involves shinning diffuse light on cells from the patient’s cheeks. The PWS can detects cell features as small as 20 nanometers and uncovers differences that seem normal when standard microscopic techniques are used. The disordered strength of the nanoscale organization of the cell which can be measured with the PWS is one of the earliest signs of carcinogenesis according to the researchers.
Following a small scale trial using this technology the researchers studies 135 participants including 63 smokers with lung cancer and 37 smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 13 smokers without COPD and 22 non-smokers and the test was sensitive to cancer and equally sensitivity to cancer at all stages including early curable cancer.
Patients with lung cancer showed markedly elevated results (over 50 percent) when tested with PWS compared to cancer-free smokers. Additional, large scale studies are necessary to confirm these results.

Air Pollution and Breast Cancer-A Possible Link Found

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

logo1267406_md

In a study reported in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives researchers reported that pollution from traffic may put women at risk of breast cancer. They combined data from several studies to arrive at this conclusion including the 2005-2006 study that created two air pollution maps that showed the level of air pollution in different parts of Montreal in 1996 and 10 years earlier and charted on the home addresses of women with breast cancer in a 1996-97 study. Results showed a significantly higher incidence of breast cancer in the areas with higher levels of air pollution. Women living in areas with the highest levels of pollution were almost twice as likely to develop breast cancer as those living in less polluted areas.
The researchers said the results must be interpreted with caution because of unknown factors and errors. However, they concluded that the link warrents further investigation.
