Risk of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer May Be Increased by Obesity

Friday, March 18th, 2011

logo1267406_md

Research published in Cancer Epidemiology: Biomarkers & Prevention confirmed that obesity and lack of physical activity increase the risk of triple-negative breast cancer among women. Triple-negative breast cancer accounts for about 10 to 20 percent of all breast cancers, has a poor prognosis. and is a subtype of breast cancer characterized by a lack of estrogen, progesterone and HER2 expression.

The researchers analyzed data from over 155,700 women enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative. Assessing levels of baseline body mass index (BMI) and recreational activities among 307 women with triple-negative breast cancer and 2,610 women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer they found that women with the highest BMI had a 35% increase risk of triple-negative breast cancer and a 39% increased risk of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. While evaluating the role of exercise they found that those who reported
high rates of physical activity had a 23 percent decrease risk of triple-negative breast cancer and a 15% decrease risk of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer.

Frank Tortorici Will Talk About Using Faith and Lifestyle Changes to Improve Tourettes Syndrome Symptoms on the Holistic Health Show

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

Frank Tortorici

On Saturday’s show Dr Carl O Helvie, Host, will interview Frank Tortorici who grew up on Long Island, N.Y. in the environment of a loving extended family. Yet with all the love surrounding him, there was a pain and darkness he shared with no one. It was the constant nagging symptoms that his family would come to know as Tourette’s Syndrome (ts).
As a child Frank felt helpless, and was constantly being prescribed various medications to subdue the symptoms. None seemed to work and even then, he often thought there had to be a better way than drugs.
At the age of 15, Frank entered an all natural body building contest and quickly discovered that working-out had an incredible calming effect on his body. He began exercising regularly and it was effective but the ‘bad tic’ days, began to bring about obsessive thoughts.
Frank was later introduced to a gluten-free way of life and started to see fast results because it helped to eliminate yeast growth in the intestines. He began researching and learning how to treat Tourette’s holistically; and learned that Candida- (a yeast-like fungal organism) is caused by such things as sugar, antibiotics and alcohol, that were contributing to ‘his’ symptoms. For the next few years Frank ate a vegetarian, raw/vegan and conscious carnivorous diet. His results were striking;
Some of the most revered high-fashion photographers and casting agents solicited Frank for their publications, endorsements of products, and requests for cameos and guest appearances in numerous films and television programs,
Frank now lives in Los Angeles, and has a satellite office in Newark, New Jersey, and an office in North, Hollywood where he offers public and private services to clients. Certified through the American Council of Exercise he gives his clients; some who have neurological disorders– an alternative – even if only a healthier way of supplementing their living condition(s).
The Tourette’s Syndrome Association (tsa) recently referred to Frank as a “renaissance man” in their newsletter. He travels nationwide sharing his story and offering advice and services to many of those who are usually overlooked in poverty circumstances in urban stricken area(s).
Frank is currently working on a host of edible delights under his ‘Yowser’ brand. You can expect his incomparable taco; with its ‘meat’ being a blend of organic sunflower seeds, sun dried tomatoes and other ingredients, to be added to his signature ‘super food chocolate mousse’ that is also diabetic friendly.
Frank’s book, Fitness, Food and Faith is available on his website. In addition, he is available for personal training specializing in muscle tone, weight loss, strength training, sports rehab, and circuit training. He is also available for speaking, and a variety of food activities including meal planning, food shopping tours, home food preparation, gluten free and vegan all natural food education. .
In a few weeks he will be a Certified Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist and can test client for adrenal fatigue, bio identical hormone therapy, liver function, mucosal barrier function, parasites, worms, and even metabolic typing. More information on his services and products is available at: http://franktortorici.com

Lower Risk of Colon Cancer Death May be Related to Consistent Exercise Program

Friday, January 7th, 2011

In a new study reported in Cancer Edidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention researchers concluded that ” long-term participation in physical activity provides the greatest reduction in risk of colon cancer deaths.” Although previous research has shown an association between exercise and colon cancer risk, there has been little research on the effect of changes in physical activity and risk of colon cancer occurrence and deaths. Researchers examined the association of 10 year and 15 year change in physical activity with risk of colon cancer occurrence and death as part of the Cancer Prevention Study II. Deaths and Cancer Occurrence were verified through examination of medical records or the National Death Index linkage. Of the more than 125,000 individuals in the study there were 1863 Incident of colon cancer and 826 fatal cases (deaths) at the end of 10 years and 1386 incident and 602 fatal cancer cases at the end of 15 years. Findings showed that consistent high physical activity over the study period was associated with a decrease in colon cancer deaths compared to those who had a consistent low level of physical activity. “Those consistently at or above the sample median physical activity level over 15 years had half the risk of colon cancer deaths as those consistently below the median.” Neither measure of physical activity change was associated with the colon cancer incidence. Lymphedema Risk Reduced by Weightlifting Following Breast Cancer Treatment

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

logo1267406_md

In an earlier post on this site (August 21, 2009) research on the benefits of weightlifting to reduce lymphedema risk after treatment for breast cancer in the New England Journal of Medicine was presented. Now another study by this research group in the Journal of the American Medical Association and presented concurrently at the Breast Cancer Symposium in San Antonio reports additional positive results. Previous research prior to these studies showed that up to 47% of breast cancer survivors who had surgery later develop lymphedema. In this current study researchers concluded “Weightlifting may play a key role in the prevention of the painful limb-swelling condition lymphedema following breast cancer treatment……limits the worsening of symptoms among women who already have lymphedema. ”

One hundred fifty four breast cancer survivors without lymphedema treated within the past 5 years were enrolled into the program. Subjects were given a 1 year membership in a fitness center near their homes and attended twice weekly, ninety minute, small group classes for the first 13 weeks. Classes by certified fitness professionals taught safe techniques of weight lifting. Following the 13 week program subjects exercised on their own and were monitored monthly for changes in arm circumference and also reported any changes in symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness and others, on a weekly basis.

Results showed that a slow progressive weight lifting regime cut the risk of developing lymphedema by 35% over the one year study period. Compared with a control group who did not change their physical activity regime, 11 % of the subjects developed lymphedema whereas 17% of the controls developed lymphedema. Results were even more dramatic for women who had 5 or more lymph nodes removed during surgery and later practiced slow progressive weight lifting. This group experienced almost a 70% reduction in the development of lymphedema with 7% developing lymphedema compared to 22 percent in the controls.

Quality of Life for Breast and Prostate Cancer Patients Is Better with Exercise

Friday, May 28th, 2010

logo1267406_md

A research paper to be presented at the 2010 American Society of Clinical Oncology on June 7 and now online at www.ASCO.org concluded that breast and prostate cancer patients who exercise regularly before and after cancer treatment report a better quality of life and less fatigue. Researchers at Henry Ford Cancer Center and Henry Ford Heart and Vascular Institute developed a program known as ExCITE (Exercise and Cancer Integrative Therapies and Education). This program individualizes exercise programs for patients receiving cancer treatment and they can exercise at the Henry Ford Fitness Center or at home depending upon their stage of treatment treatment.
At present 30 female breast cancer patients and 20 prostate cancer patients between age 35 and 80 are part of the study. All were newly diagnoses when admitted to the study and were followed during and for 1 year following completion of their cancer treatment.
The patients exercise capacity, skeletal muscle strength and endurance were measured before the program started. In addition, general blood work, metabolic screens, bone density and inflammatory biomarkers were obtained before the program started.
Subjects were offered exercise and diet recommendations based upon their baseline exercise tolerance, weight, overall health and type of cancer treatment. For patients having hot flashes, nausea/vomiting, insomnia and neuropathy resulting from the cancer treatment acupuncture was used. Patients reported feeling better and having less fatigue as a result of the program that is ongoing.
