After 7 months of scientific and clinical studies the President of Bejing’s Chaoyang Hospital in Bejing during the last week announced a new herbal remedy called “Jin Hua Qing Gen Fang” as effective in treating A/H1N1 flu. He said it shortens the length of time patients have a fever and improves their respiratory system with no noted harmful side effects to patients. It was developed by a team of over 120 medical specialists at a cost of about 1.47 million U.S. dollars and was used in both scientific and clinical studies. Studies included experiments on more that 4,000 mice and clinical studies on 410 patients with A/H1N1 flu. It was picked from more than 100 classic anti-flu prescriptions based upon Chinese herbal medicine.
It is about 1/4th the cost of Tamiflu the current treatment of choice that was recommended by the World Health Organization. The goal is to make this available to all as an alternative to current drugs.

A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on August 18, 2009 reported that a Chinese herb known as thunder god improved symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis better than a prescribed medication. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health, The University of Texas in Dallas and 9 rheumatology clinics around the USA randomly assigned 121 patients with six or more painful and swollen joints to either take 60 mgm of thunder god vine root extract three times a day for 6 months or 1 gram of sulfasalazine (Azulfidine) two times a day for 6 months. All study subjects were allowed to take prednisone and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s).
A standardized measure of joint involvement was assessed on each subject.
Side effects were experienced in both groups with stomach complaints and digestive symptoms being the most common ones reported. Almost half of all participants dropped out of the study before the end but more dropped out of the sulfasalazine group than the thunder god vine group.
Of the 62 patients who completed the study 65% saw improvement in joint pain, joint functioning, and inflammation in the thunder god group compared to 36% in the sulfasalazine group.
Although thunder god has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years it is known to have a wide range of side effects ranging from diarrhea, upset stomach, and skin rashes and men may experience infertility and women may stop having menstrual periods while on it.
There is ongoing debate about the value of using this herb until more is known about it’s efficacy, side effects and interactions with other medications and herbs.

The Hoxsey treatment for cancer has been around since 1924 when Harry Hoxsey opened his first clinic. He used his herbal tonic successfully with many patients. Ingredients of the original tonic included potassium iodine, licorice, red clover, burdock root, stillingia root, berberis root, poke root, cascara sagrada, prickley ash bark, and buckthorne bark. Some who currently use this tonic have made minor changes in the herbs but it is still effective. These are some of the same herbs recommended by Edgar Cayce in his readings for cancer patients and also used in their cancer syrup Trifolium manufactured by the Parke-Davis Company. Many reports claim a success rate of 80 to 95% without reoccurance when this treatment is used as a first defense before surgery, radiation or chemotherapy.
The Hoxsey therapy was the first widely used alternative non-toxic cancer treatment in the United States. It was used by thousands of patients in clinics throughout the United States and at one time around 1953 there were about 12,000 patients at the main clinic in Dallas, Texas that was the largest private cancer center in the world.
Hoxsey was challenged continually by the medical world and government but at one point a team of medical doctors review his client outcomes and treatments and concluded that he was “successfully treating pathologically proven cases of cancer, both internal and external without the use of surgery, radium or x-rays. Accepting the standard yardstick of cases that have remained symptom-free in excess of five to six years after treatment, established by medical authorities, we have seen sufficient cases to warrent such a conclusion. Some of those presented before us have been free of symptoms for as long as twenty-four years, and the physical evidence indicates that they are all enjoying exceptional health at this time. We as a Committee, feel the Hoxsey treatment is superior to such conventional methods of treatment as x-ray, radium and surgery. ……”
Although Hoxsey was exonerated by the courts he continued to be harrassed and eventually moved his clinic to Mexico. Even his nurse, Mildred Nelson, joined him to prove him a hoax but when he successfully treated her mother she became an ardent follower and thus, continued his work in Mexico when he died. It is an interesting story that the reader might enjoy locating and reading.
The herbs in the Hoxsey treatment serve as blood purifiers or cleansers, cleansing the organs and reactivating the immune system. They also reduce the blood supply to the tumor reducing tumor growth and also change the body fluids to an alkaline state that further inhibits tumor growth. All efforts are toward bring the body back to a precancerous state. In general the goal of treatment is to rebuild deficiencies and inhibit or eliminate cancer cells using supplements; cleansing the organs of toxins with the blood purifiers; returning the body to a healthy alkaline state with diet and herbs, and counseling on the removal of environmental factor such as stress and toxins that are conducive to cancer.

One of the guests, Mrs Linda Wilson, interviewed by Dr Carl O Helvie on the Holistic Health Show used the herbal tea Essiac, and Ave successfully in her recovery from kidney cancer.
Essiac Tea has been used since the early 1900’s. In 1922, Rene Caisse was told by one of her clients about her breast cancer recovery using what was later named essiac tea (caisse spelled backwards). It had been given to her by an Ojibwa Indian Medicine man 30 years earlier and was made from 4 herbs -sheep sorrel, burdock root, slippery elm bark, and turkey rhubarb root. When her aunt developed stomach cancer that had metastasized and her doctors gave up on her, Rene collected and brewed the herbal preparation and her aunt lived another 21 years. She continued using the preparation with her cancer clients and eventually started her own cancer clinic under the supervision of physicians who supported her work. She treated thousands of patients who traditional medicine had given up on and turned away.
Because most of her patients came as a last resort and were in advanced stages of cancer the treatment was not successful with everyone. For some it controlled the cancer, for others it mainly alleviated the pain. However, thousands of clients reported complete cures. In 1937 the Royal Canadian commission of Canada held hearings and concluded that Essiac was a cure for cancer.
Ava (in the U.S.A.) or Avemar (outside the U.S.A.) is also an older cancer treatment developed by a scientist in Hungary who was awarded the 1937 Nobel Prize in Medicine for describing the essential role of vitamin C in the life sustaining processes of cellular metabolism. This work has continued by scientists in Hungary who have refined an all natural produce by fermenting wheat germ with baker’s yeast. It is available as a once a day. pleasant tasting instant drink and is being studied and recommended by doctors around the world. Its advertised uses include: enhanced immune functioning, stimulating natural killer cells, increased energy, restore appetite, and replenish nutrients. It is advertised as useful for: colds and flu, cancer, malnutrition, eating disorders, and anemia.
