A new study reported online January 12, 2010 in Cancer Research concluded that leafy green vegetables, folate, and some multivitamins may serve as a protective factor against lung cancer in current and former smokers. This first step in understanding a complex association was funded by the National Cancer Institute.
Researchers studied more than 1,100 current and former smokers who submitted sputum specimens and completed questionaires about their dietary intake. Most of the sample (75%) were women. Sputum samples were examined for the methylation status of eight genes that are linked to the increased risk of lung cancer in previous studies. Gene Methylation is believed to be a major mechanism for lung cancer development and progression and also a potential marker for the early detection of lung cancer.
The researchers investigated the association between 21 dietary variables and methylation and found that higher intakes of leafy vegetables and folate were significantly associated with a reduced probability of high methylation. Additional research is needed to validate these findings.

At last some good news for males who love their daily coffee. Researchers at the American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference in December reported that men with a higher daily coffee intake had a significantly lower risk of advanced and lethal prostate cancer. Coffee contains antioxidants, minerals and caffeine which could impact cancer risk.
Researchers from Harvard Medical School’s Channing Laboratory and School of Public Health. and from McGill University evaluated data from around 50,000 participants in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study.
Regular and decaffeinated coffee intake was evaluated in 1986 and every 4 years thereafter until 2006. During that period 4,975 men developed prostate cancer.
Those who drank 6 or more cups of coffee daily had a 19% lower risk of prostate cancer compared with those who did not drink coffee so there was a small protective effect for the coffee drinkers. However, for advanced and fatal cancer rates the risk of each was 59% lower in men who consumed the most coffee and among those who never smoked the risk was 89% lower. Results were similar for regular and decaffeinated coffee. These results are potentially important and should be confirmed by other studies.

A study in the December 9 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Associan reported that soy foods which are popular in the United States can help reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence and subsequent death when eaten in moderate amounts. They also claim that it may reduce the risk of death in women with estrogen receptor-positive cancers and women taking tamoxifen.
The research, led by Dr Xiao Ou Shu, professor of medicine and cancer epidemiologist at Vanderbilt University, observed over 5,000 Chinese women between the ages of 20 and 75 who had been diagnosed with breast cancer during the 2002 to 2006 period. Information was collected on cancer diagnosis, treatment received, diet, and post-diagnosis progression. The researchers found that women with the highest soy consumption reported 32 percent lower risk of cancer recurrence and 29 percent reduced risk of death than those who consumed less than 5.3 grams of soy daily.

A new study by the National Institutes of Health and AARP found that people who consume more calcium and dairy foods have a lower risk of colon cancer. Diet and other information was collected on over 50,000 people between the ages of 50 and 71. After 7 years the risk of colon cancer was about 20% lower in men who consumed the most calciuim from food and supplements (about 1,500 mg. daily) than in men who consumed the least (about 500mg daily).
The risk in women was about 30% lower for women who consumed the most calcium (about 1,900 mg daily) that those who consumed the least (about 500 mg daily). Colorectal cancer was also lower in men and women who ate the most daily foods. However, contract to earlier stuidies dairy was not linked to a higher risk of ovarian cancer and calcium was not linked to a higher risk of prostate cancer.
It is best to try to ingest 1,000 mg daily of calcium if you are under 50 and 1,200 mg daily if you are older. If you assume there is 300 mg in each serving of milk, cheese, yogurt, or calcium-fortified orange juice take a supplement to get any additional calcium needed. In light of the earlier studies of calcium and prostate cancer (not found here) men may want to limit intake of calcium to 1,200 mg daily. Additional information can be found in the Archives of Internal Medicine, 169:391, 2009.

In her book Outsmart Your Cancer: Alternative Non-Toxic Treatments that Work, Tanya Harter Pierce, this week’s guest, discusses whether or not to alkalize if you have cancer. She says this is an important question and in almost all cases the answer is yes. The rational for this is that most alternative practitioners agree that cancer cells thrive in an acidic body and in general, cancer patients are much more acidic than non-cancerous patients.
The primary way to maintain a normal pH level in your body is with the use of minerals from the diet. In an earlier blog I talked about the alkaline diet recommended by Edgar Cayce and how this was similar to the anti-inflammatory diet discussed by Dr Andrew Weil. It will be remembered that it is not the acidity of the foods that determines their effect in the body but how they promote alkalinity or acidity. For example, citrus fruit such as limes are acidic outside the body but promote alkalinity when broken down and processed within the body. In general, minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and others are very alkalizing to the body and many fruit and vegetables tend to be high in these alkalizing minerals. Thus, they are often recommended as a mainstay of the diet of a cancer patient. In an earlier blog when I talked about my cancer regime 33 years ago when I was given 6 months to live, my diet consisted of 75% raw fruits and vegetables and a limited amount of cooked vegetables but no sugar, meat, dairy, poultry and the other acid producing foods identified below from Tanya’s book.
Tanya discusses acid producing foods (meats, fish, poultry, eggs, milk, processed grains refined sugar, nuts and seeds, ice cream, chocolate and other similar foods) and alkaline producing foods (raw fruit and vegetables, sprouts, olive oil, goat cheese, stevia, molasses, maple sugar, green tea, miso and sauerkraut, herbs and similar foods). She continues to discuss optimum pH level and how to test for alkaline balance and how to alkaline, if needed. I suggest reading this or similar material on alkalizing because it is not only useful for individuals with cancer but also those with yeast infections and other bodily imbalances.
