A new study published in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology concluded that rats given regular multi-vitamin and mineral supplements showed a significantly lower risk of developing colon cancer when exposed to carcinogens.

In the study rats were fed a high-fat diet (20% fat) over a 32 week period and were divided into 6 groups that were exposed to different combinations of supplements and carcinogens: the colon carcinogenesis induced in the study rats has characteristic mimicking human colon cancer. Researchers found that the rats given a high-fat plus low fiber diet and exposed to carcinogens developed precancerous lesions. whereas those given a similar intervention but also given daily multivitamin and mineral supplements, had a significant reduction (84%) in the formation of pre-cancerous lesions and did not develop tumors. The researchers concluded that multivitamin and mineral supplements synergistically contribute to the cancer chemopreventive potential, and hence, regular supplements of multi-vitamins and minerals could reduce the risk of colon cancer.”

Research published in the April 25 online edition of the American Journal of Epidemiology concluded that men with the highest blood levels of an inflammation-lowering omega 3 fatty acid (docosahexaenoic acid or DHA) (most often found in fatty fish) have a 2 1/2 times greater probability of developing aggressive, high grade prostate cancer than men who had the lowest DHA levels. On the other hand, men with the highest blood ratio of trans-fatty acids had a 50 percent reduction in the probability of high grade prostate cancer. Trans-fatty acids are found in processed foods and are linked to inflammation and heart diseases. In addition, neither of the fats increased the risk of low-grade prostate cancer. Researchers expected the opposite results, that is, omega-3 fatty acids would reduce prostate cancer risk and omega-6 and trans-fatty acids would increase prostate cancer risk.
Data for this study was provided by a subset (over 3,400 men) of a larger sample in the nationwide Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial with men age 55 and older. Half of the men developed prostate cancer during the study and half did not and prostate cancer was confirmed by prostate biopsy. Few in the sample took fish oil supplements-the most common non-food source of omega 3 fatty acids-but got their omega 3 from fish. The authors concluded “the beneficial effects of eating fish to prevent heart disease outweighs any harm related to prostate cancer risk.” “What the study shows is the complexity of nutrition and its impact on disease risk, and that we should study suxch assocoatopns rigorously rather than make assumptions.”

Researchers at Queensland University of Technology report that the survival rate of those+ with prostate cancer may increase in the future due to a new vitamin E treatment. Because existing chemotherapy and hormone therapy treatments for prostate cancer do not kill the prostate cancer stem cells believed to cause the regrowth of prostate cancer, the researchers discovered a specific form of T3, called gamma tocotrienol (y-T3) that successfully kills prostate cancer stem cells and has the potential to inhibit the recurrence of prostate cancer. Using mice implanted with the prostate cancer cells and fed vitamin E in a 1 year study over 70% showed no cancer formations. In the remaining subjects of the experimental group tumor regrowth was considerably reduced and in the control group 100% of the subjects had tumor regrowth. The University of Iowa and the Mayo Clinic reported at the December annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology that they found an association between higher levels of Vitamin D and greater survival of individuals being treated for lymphoma. In the study funded by the National Cancer Institute the researchers measured the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in the sample of 374 patients newly diagnoses with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. They found that half had deficient serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels of less than 25 nanograms per milliliter. This group also had twice the rate of dying during the study period and 1 1/2 times the adjusted rate of disease progression than those with optimum levels of Vitamin D. This was the first study to look at lymphoma outcomes and vitamin D. The researchers concluded that although the results look promising for the use of Vitamin D supplements or periodic time in the sun in the treatment of lymphoma, these results need to be validated by other research studies.

On Saturday, Dr Arlene Donar talked about melatonin as an anti-cancer hormone. Several studies suggest a connection between melatonin and cancer. Researchers at Harvard evaluated almost 150 women with invasive breast cancer and just over 290 without cancer as part of the Nurse Health Study. They measured the melatonin urine levels from morning samples and found that the women with the highest melatonin levels had the lowest risk of cancer.
In another study researchers used melatonin supplements with rats having advanced and untreated breast cancer . Given daily this significantly increased survival in the rats. They concluded that the results suggest that melatonin is beneficial in the survival with advanced breast cancer.
In a third study Mills et al at the McMasters University in Hamilton, Canada did a systematic review of randomized control trials and meta-analysis of melatonin in the treatment of cancer. They included 10 randomized controlled studies published between 1992 and 2003 that included 643 patients. and found that melatonin reduced the risk of death at 1 year and further, the effects were consistent across melatonin dose and type of cancer. No severe side effects were reported. They concluded that the substantial reduction in risk of death, low adverse events reported, and low cost related to this treatment suggests great potential for melatonin in the treatment of cancer.
These are a few of the studies published to date. Most researchers recognize the importance of further studies.
