Dr Carlos Garcia

Utopia Wellness is a leading-edge medical center that offers integrative, holistic, patient-focused medical treatments. Under the direction of Carlos M. Garcia, M.D., programs designed for anyone who wants to enjoy optimal health are offered: Whether suffering from a chronic illness or simply wanting to prevent disease. Our extensive menu of wellness programs complement each other by addressing all issues related to well-being.

Dr. Carlos M. Garcia M.D. received his formal medical training at the University of Massachusetts, Medical School followed by an internship in Internal Medicine and residency in Anesthesia, both at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, PA.

After moving to the Tampa Bay area in 1984, he began his practice as an Anesthesiologist at Bayfront Medical Center, Edward White Hospital, and Physicians’ Community Hospital.

Over his years working in hospitals, he came to realize that traditional medicine was driven more by the profits of pharmaceutical companies and hospitals than it was on providing the patient with the best possible care. So in 1996, Dr. Garcia redirected his medical focus to natural alternative health care including holistic medicine, integrative cancer treatments, Chelation therapy, bio-identical hormone replacement, IV vitamins and antioxidants, and weight loss. In all of these areas, he uses non-harmful and natural alternatives to conventional treatments. His passion to help others achieve optimal health through natural medicine led him to found Utopia Wellness, where he incorporates the best that medicine has to offer, traditional and alternative.

Dr. Garcia’s focus over the past several years has been on helping people suffering from cancer and its related diseases. His approach is holistic in that he addresses not only the tumor or cancer but also on the whole person and the cause of the cancer. To be truly cancer free for life, you must identify and eliminate the underlying cause of the disease.  In 2012, Dr. Garcia published his book Cancer is a Symptom: The Real Cause Revealed where he addresses the prospect that cancer is merely a symptom and unless you heal the underlying cause, you will never be truly cancer free.He also co authored Cancer Free with Bill Henderson.

Dr. Garcia is a member of ACAM (American College for the Advancement of Medicine), ICIM (International College of Integrative Medicine), and the American Holistic Health Association.  Additionally, Dr. Garcia holds certifications in Chelation Therapy from the American Board of Chelation Therapy, and has given numerous lectures on various health topics to professionals, medical students and the public, has had a radio talk show, and has been interviewed for several health related television news topics.

Food/Antibiotics May Cause IBS

Holistic-Health-Show-with-Dr-Carl-O-Helvie

A recent review of research published in the American Journal of Physiology–Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, suggested that changes in the microorganisms in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract may be the cause of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This condition is common in up to 20 percent of the middle aged people in North America who suffer from abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea, or constipation or both. In the past it was thought to be caused by emotional stress, environmental factors, and genetics. Based upon their review of research they found: 1)diet can change the makeup of bacteria in the GI tract that may contribute to symptoms of IBS;  2) antibiotic use, which disturbs microbiota in the gut is associated with IBS; 3) changes in the gut microbiota  influences the ability of the GI tract to contract to move waste through the system; and 4) changes in the gut microbes can impair communication networks between the immune, nervous and endocrine systems, predisposing people to IBS.  They also found that emotional stress may change the shape and function of microrganisms in the GI tract. Authors were optimistic that their findings would help facilitate treatments for IBS.

Is there a threat of antibiotic resistance for surgical and chemotherapy patients.

Wednesday, October 21st, 2015

logo1267406_mdA new study published in the Lancet Infectious Disease Journal concluded that the rising antibiotic resistance could have disastrous consequences for patients receiving surgery or cancer chemotherapy.  New estimates show that up to half of infections following surgery and over a quarter of those following chemotherapy are caused by organisms already resistant to standard prophylactic antibiotics in the United States. They further say that just a 30% reduction to the efficacy of preventive antibiotics that are given routinely before, during, and after these procedures could result in 120,000 more infections and 6300 infection-related deaths every year in the United States.  Although bacterial resistance was known, it extent was unknown previously.

Researchers conducted a review of all meta-analyses of randomized control trials conducted between 1968 and 2011. They examined the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis in preventing infection-related deaths after 10 of the most common surgical procedures and blood cancer chemotherapy and calculated the additional number of infections and infection0related deaths under different scenerious of reduction in the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis. In addition, they use data and existing studies from the National Health Safety network they estimated the proportion of infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to currently used standard prophylactic antibiotics., They found that between 39% (after caesarean section)and 50-90% (after trans-rectal prostate biopsy) of surgical site infections are caused by organisms that are  resistant to recommended antibiotic prophylactic regimes. Also, just over a quarter of the infections after blood cancer chemotherapy are resistant to standard antibiotics. Using additional modelling they estimated that a 10% drop in the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis could result in 40,000 additional infections every year in the United States at best. or 280,000 infections in a pessimistic scenerio –a 70% drop in efficacy.  They also concluded the infection-related deaths could increase by 2100in an optimistic scenerio. or even a 15,000 deaths in a pessimistic scenerio. They concluded that clinicians have a responsibility to prevent this from happening by clinician education, guideline development, and formulary restrictions to optimize antibiotic use.
