My first guest is Dr Francisco Contreras, whose father, the late Dr. Ernesto Contreras, Sr. opened the Oasis of Hope Hospital in 1963 and initiated what would become a healing tradition known as the Total Cancer Care Approach. Dr. Contreras is recognized in multiple publications as a pioneer in body, mind, and spirit medicine. At the foundation of his philosophy were two principles inspired by Hippocrates, the father of medicine, and Jesus Christ, The Great Physician: 1) First, do no harm; 2) Love your patient as you love yourself.
Because of his philosophy, Dr. Contreras taught his medical staff to never prescribe treatments that would destroy the quality of life of the patient. He also insisted that Oasis of Hope physicians offer therapies that they would be willing to take if in the same circumstances. His emphasis on the doctor-patient relationship, along with his integration of natural and conventional therapies with emotional and spiritual counseling, were the principle reasons why more than 100,000 patients from 55 nations have come to Oasis of Hope for treatment over the last 45 years. The Oasis of Hope continues under this same philosophy today under the direction of Dr Ernesto Contreras’ son, Dr Francisco Contreras.
Francisco Contreras, MD – Graduated with honors from the prestigious School of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He continued his studies at the University of Vienna, Austria, where he specialized in Surgical Oncology and graduated with honors once more. My second guest is Deborah Wofford who will share what God did for her. At age 12 she was raped and became pregnant and had an abortion. Since then she was on a tale spin. She desperately wanted love because she did not get it at home and did not know how to love herself. Every relationship she was in had some form of abuse that caused her to have low self-esteem. She was married for 10 years and her husband stabbed her 12 times with a hunting knife and she was pronounced dead. But her encounter with God changed her life. Dr Francisco Contreras and Dr Arlene Donar will be guests on the Holistic Health Show this week. Its tax time and that is very time consuming for me. Thus, I must repeat a previous show that I hope you will enjoy. On the following show I will resume my back pain series.

Dr Donar graduated summa cum laude with a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine. She is board certified and licensed as a Naturopathic Physician in Connecticut. Part of her education took place in Switzerland where she worked with patients having cancer and other acute and chronic conditions. She also completed an extern program in New York City at Callen-Lorde community Health Center where she worked with allopathic physicians who specialized in HIV/AID’s health care.
Dr Donar is the former Medical Director of the supplement manufacturers, Heartguardian, located in Princeton, New Jersey. Currently, she is in private practice working with clients with chronic health problems and lectures locally on prevention and treatment of diseases using biological medicine and clinical nutrition. I will also talk briefly about my lung cancer experience 36 years ago when I was given 6 months to live by traditional cancer specialists and consequently chose an alternative approach to successful treatment. In his discussion last Saturday of cancer treatment at the Oasis of Hope, Dr Francisco Contreras talked about the Integrative Regulatory Therapy at his hospital that integrates physical-mental-and spiritual aspects of health into the treatment plans and interventions for cancer patients. He also discussed how their success rate for various types of cancer survival were 2 to 15 times more successful than in other hospitals and attributes this success to the holistic focus.
There is ample research to substantiate the value of a holistic approach to health and illness recovery. Hundreds of studies have been completed on meditation and results show improvement in physical health such as reduced blood pressure, decreased need for medical care, decreased chronic pain, depression and anxiety, and increased mobility and activity among others. Another area researched is the influence of positive attitudes on physical health. In one study by Kamen-Siegel he found that optimism influenced the immune system in a positive way using a sample of 300 elderly people and Ranard found similar results in another study and concluded that hopeful people have a more robust immune system. Likewise, Friedman and ValdenBos found that enthusiastic people tended to be more resilient, self-healing people and that enthusiasm is correlated with recovery from illness. In another study Shekelle found that hostility had a negative effect on health.
Benson found that when under stress individuals experience increases in blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rates that strain the body and lower its immunity. On the other hand he also found that repeating a prayer, word, sound, phrase or movement such as in prayer, meditation, tai chi or yoga had a healthy effect.
Matthews and Clark say that in 75% of 325 studies reviewed the finding indicate that involvement in religious activities benefits health and well being.
These are just a few of the many studies that have looked at the effect of mental and spiritual activities on physical health and recovery from illness but support the results found by Dr Contreras in the recovery of cancer patients in his hospital.
In my own life I found this concept of holism to be true and demonstrated when I had lung cancer and was given 6 months to live—-33 years ago. I believe the holistic approach accounted for my recovery and continued good health.

He received personal instructions from his father, Dr Ernesto Contreras who was an alternative medicine pioneer. The Oasis of Hope was founded in 1963 and since then the hospital has provided integrative cancer treatment for over 100,000 patients. Dr Contreras will talk about
the outstanding success in recovery of their cancer patients that has gained a high regard for the care provided. One of the latest most notorized patients was Daniel Hauser the teen from Minnesota with cancer whose mother ran away and took him to the Oasis of Hope with the police following her.
