A new study published in Briefings in Functional Genomics evaluated how epigenetics modulate human genetic programs and how it emphasizes or silences genes and concluded that if epigenetics is disrupted. it might switch on oncogenes (genes that under certain circumstances transform cells into tumor cells) or shut down tumor suppressors. Both processes will transform cells into tumor cells and cause cancer.

Experiments carried out years ago showed that chemical modification affecting the packaging of DNA can switch genes on or off. Epigenetics evolved to explain the changes caused by modification of gene expression , instead of altering the gene code itself and focuses on factors that regulate how and when certain genes are turned on and off.  In contract, epigenomics relates to the analysis of global epigenetic changes across many genes. Current research shows that complementary forces of on and off switches keep each other is check. If one force overtakes, the system gets out of equibrium. and the cells either experience unlimited growth, cancer, or death. It is believed that a better understanding of these processes will lead to counter factors to prevent cancer.

Do epigenetics play a role in breast cancer?

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

logo1267406_mdRecently Dr Dawson Church discussed epigenetics on the Holistic Health Show radio.  Recently two research studies on their role in cancer were reported. The link between epigenetics and breast cancer will be briefly discussed here. Science Digest from research that  breast cancer running in families and some genetic predisposition such as being BRAC1 and BRAC2 mutation carriers,  explains only part of the overall occurance of breast cancer in families. It has also been shown that epigenitic changes altering gene expression without affecting the DNA also plays a role in this process.

Researchers have examined whether a specific epigenetic modification called methylation of the DNA can be associated with breast cancer  family history in unaffected women from high risk breast cancer families. Their research shows that the level of DNA methylation in white blood-cells from cancer-free women could be one of the factors playing a role in the cluste4ring of breast cancer in families with extensive cancer histories among its members.

Can Smoking Change our Genes?

Friday, December 27th, 2013

logo1267406_mdA new study published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics concluded that smoking alters several genes that can be associated with health problems such as increased risk of cancer and diabetes. Although we inherit our genes from our patents the genetic material can later be changes by epigenetic  modification such as chemical alterations of the DNA that affect the activity of the genes. These alterations are normally caused by aging but can also be a result of environmental factors and lifestyle.Researchers identified a large number of genes that were altered in smokers but found noi such effect in non-smokers. The researcher said “This means that the epigenetic modifications are likely not caused by substances in the tobacco, but by the hundreds of different elements that are formed when the tobacco is burnt.”  ….”Our results therefore indicate that the increased disease risk associated with smoking is partly a cuased by epigenetiv changes.”

Dr Dawson Church (EFT and Epigenetics) and Dr Richard Ruhling (Holistic Health and Dangers of Prescription Drugs) next Guests.

Sunday, December 15th, 2013

dawsonrruhlingMy  guests on Saturday are Dr Dawson Church (left) and Dr Richard Ruhring.

Dawson Church, PhD, has edited or authored many books, and collaborated with leading authorities including Larry Dossey, MD, Bernie Siegel, MD, Christiane Northrup, MD, and others. He founded Soul Medicine Institute to research and teach emerging psychological and medical techniques that can yield fast and radical cures. His award-winning book, The Genie in Your Genes, (www.YourGeniusGene.com), pioneers the field of Epigenetics, explaining the remarkable self-healing mechanisms now emerging at the juncture of emotion and gene expression. He has authored numerous scientific studies through the Foundation for Epigenetic Medicine, and is the editor of Energy Psychology, a peer-reviewed journal. He shares how to apply these breakthroughs to health and athletic performance through EFT Universe (http://www.EFTUniverse.com), one of the largest alternative medicine sites on the web.

Dr Richard Ruhling , a retired physician who taught Health Science at Loma Linda University after Cardiology Fellowship and board-certification in Internal Medicine.  Loma Linda was featured in the cover story of  National Geographic (Nov, 2005) on Longevity.

In my 70’s, I know something about longevity and I’m not about to sign up for any government “health” insurance programs. We can do better by taking care of ourselves because good eating habits can help reverse most health conditions–our problems usually come from what we put in our mouths. This includes prescription drugs which are a leading cause of illness, disability and death.  More information is available at: http://RichardRuhling.com

More Research that Broccoli Does Help Prevent Cancer.

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Research published in the journal Clinical Epigenetics found another way that the “sulforaphane” compound in broccoli prevent cancer through the complex mechanism of epigenetics.  Epigenetics refers to both our genetic code and to the way diet, toxins, and other forces  change which  genes get activated or expressed. Previous research showed that HDAC inhibitors, such as sulforaphane can help prevent cancer by restoring proper balance in the body. The current study found a second epigenetic mechanism, DNA methylation, that plays a similar role. The researchers say ” It appears that DNA methylation and HDAC inhibition, both of which can be influenced by sulforaphane, work together to maintain proper cell function.”  When this process is disrupted, cancer may result.  “Cancer is very complex and it’s usually not just one thing that has gone wrong.  It’s increasingly clear that sulforaphane is a real multi-tasker. The more we find out about it the more benefits it appears to have.”

DNA methylation turns off genes and helps control what DNA material gets read as part of genetic communication within cells. Cancer results when there is a mix up of this process. Sulforaphane is plentiful in broccoli and is also found in cauliflowe and kale.
