A new study published in Phytomedicine concludes that regular drinking of green tea may protect the brain from developing Alzheimers and play a role in protecting the body against cancer. Using technology that simulates human digestion, researchers were able to evaluate the effect of digested green tea on the body and showed the protective properties of green tea previously shown in studies were still present following digestion. They found that green tea digested by enzymes in the gut produces a chemical that is more effective against the development of Alzheimers than the undigested form. They also found that the digested chemicals had anti-cancer properties and significantly slowed down the growth of cancer cells used in the study.

Although past studies have shown green tea to be effective in protecting individuals from breast cancer a new prospective study found different results. In the study published in the October 28 issue of online Breast Cancer researchers studied data on green tea and the breast cancer incidence of over 53,000 women and found no inverse relationship between green tea consumption and breast cancer regardless of tea type, menopause status, or hormone receptor subtype. The adjusted ratio of 1:12 did not vary whether the women drank five or more cups of green tea per day or less than one cup per day with a P value of 0.60. The researchers concluded that their findings were consistent with those of three other prospective studies.
