An invitro study published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research concluded that “caffeine derivatives in mate tea not only induced death in human colon cancer cells, they also reduced important markers of inflammation.” Inflammation can trigger the progression of cancer. In the study, researchers isolated, purified, and then treated human colon cancer cells with caffeoylquinic acid (CQA) from mate tea and as they increased the CQA concentration cancer cells died as a result of apoptosis. In other words, “cancer cells self-destruct because its DNA has been damaged.” The researchers identified the mechanism that led to cell death and have completed a follow up study in which they compare the development of colon cancer in rats that drank mate tea as their only source of water with a control group that drank only water. These results will be published soon.
The researcher concluded “We believe there’s ample evidence to support drinking mate tea for its bioactive benefits especially if you have reason to be concerned about colon cancer. Mate tea bags are available in health food stores and are increasingly available in large supermarkets.”

In a new study being published in the net edition of Cancer Cell researchers demonstrated that HRG (histidine-rich-glycoprotein), a protein that naturally occurs in the body will inhibit the growth and spread of cancer cells by activating specific immune cells. However, this process is dependent upon inflammatory cells which are caused by most cancers and may either stimulate the growth of tumors or inhibit them. This cancer caused inflammation consisting of tumor associated macrophages (TAM’s) that are either M2 macrophages that support cancer cell growth and moderate the body’s immune defense, or M1 macrophages that inhibit tumor growth by activating immune cells that are toxic to the tumors.

The researchers say “”HRG can transform inflammatory cells in the tumor from M2 macrophages, which promote tumor growth, to M1 macrophages, which inhibit tumor growth” and “M1 macrophages also inhibit the spread of tumor cells….”.

Studying 3 different types of tumors in mice they found the tumors producing HRG grew more slowly and did not spread. In the process the HRG caused M2 macrophages to transform into M1 macrophages. Further research is planned.

A study reported in the December 15 issue of Cancer Research concluded that an inflammatory process in the breast promotes the growth of stem cells responsible for the development of tumors. They further stated that “inactivating the NFKB inflammatory pathway in the breast epithelium blocks the onset and progression of the breast cancer in living animals.” Although there are side effects to suppressing the whole body’s inflammatory processes, the study showed a rationale for selectively targeting the breast only in anti-inflammatory therapy.

After 12 years of research the researchers created a mouse in which the inflammatory system in the adults breast could be regulated. These mice were programmed to develop cancer but if they selectively blocked inflammation in the breast, the tumors would not develop. They also found that this inactivation reduced the number of cancer stem cells in the breast.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science explained why asbestos causes cancer. The researchers looked at the paradox of how asbestos fibers that kill cells can cause cancer when dead cells should not grow to form tumors. Findings show that when asbestos kills cells, it induces a process called ‘programmed cell necrosis” releasing a molecule called high-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1). This starts an inflammatory process causing the release of mutagens and factors that promote tumor growth.
The researchers found that patients exposed to asbestos had elevated levels of HMGB1 in their blood. Thus, it may be possible to identify those with asbestos by simple HMGB1 blood tests and targeting these individuals for prevention and treatment.
The researchers are interesting in determining whether interfering with the inflammatory reaction caused by asbestos and HMGB1 can decrease the cancer incidence of cohorts exposed to asbestos. They also wonder if taking an aspirin or similar drug that stops inflammation will prevent mesothelioma. More research is planned to test this hypothesis.
