But he has found the one thing many strive for: the path to enlightenment. On the show he talks about this path and his book The Journal Home: Autobiograpy of an American Swami. My first guest is on Saturday on BBS Radio (www.bbsradio.com) is Radhanath Swami who in 1950, was born as Richard Slavin into a middle class Jewish family in Chicago. At age 19, he set out to wander the world in search of a closer connection to God. Today, Radhanath Swami is one of India’s premier spiritual leaders, with public appearances that draw thousands of followers.
Loyal supporters of Radhanath Swami donate millions of dollars each year, all of which is used to head up some of the most highly regarded community service projects in Mumbai. From the formation of a massive food distribution center for indigent children to emergency relief programs, to the creation of an orphanage, an eye clinic, and a hospital—his contributions to India are so vast they have earned him a celebrity-like status. And yet Radhanath Swami’s life is anything but glamorous. As a swami—or “monk exclusively dedicated to God’s services”—he has taken a vow of poverty, celibacy, and abstinence from intoxicants. He has no property, no bank account, and not a penny to his name. But he has found the one thing so many strive to achieve: the path to enlightenment.
His book The Journey Home is an inspiring tale of adventure and profound spiritual discovery and follows Richard Slavin through a life-changing journey down the path of enlightenment to his current status as one of India’s great spiritual leaders, Radhanath Swami.
During his tour of the United States I was fortunate to talk with him for this interview. He will tell us about his journey from Chicago to the present, his experiences with high ranking spiritual leaders like the Dali Lama and Mother Teresa, how spirituality addresses timely topics such as the BP oil spill and the environment, healing resulting from faith that he has seen and other subjects. My second guest, Betsy Thompson, has always worked with the media. She grew up in Philadelphia and received a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania. Thereafter she worked as an account executive for WFH radio in Philadelphia and from there went to radio stations WPEN, and WFLN. After that she became a commercial print model and acted in television commercials in Philadelphia and New York. From 1987 to 1999 she worked in Los Angeles at the motion picture and television company Castle Rock Entertainment as the assistant to the chairman and CEO. In August 1999 she followed her boss to Warner Brothers and became his executive assistant as he assumed the position of President and CEO. . She stayed in this position until she retired in 2005 to write full time. She has written 6 books and the latest one is Walking Through Illusion: Jesus Speaks of the People Who Shared His Journey .
