Ultrasound Used for Rectal Cancer Treatment

logo1267406_mdResearchers at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust reported on a patient with rectal cancer who was the first to be treated with ultrasound at Hammersmith Hospital in London. High intensity ultrasound was used to heat up and kill the cancer cells. This procedure can treat tumors up to about 40 cc in volume and can heat the tissue to 90 degrees centigrade. The first patient was given a low dose of 70 degrees centigrade. The advantage of this procedure is that there is no incision made and it is completely non-invasive so recovery is much quicker. It also allows faster and more accurate targeting of tumors that traditional therapy and can be repeated with minimal risk of toxicity unlike radiotherapy.
Plans are underway to use the procedure with 50 additional patients and to carry out further research.
