Mel is an award winning Philadelphia based poet/singer/song writer, whose poetry has appeared in several media outlets and journals including Philadelphia Poets 2007, 2008, and 2009, Mad Poets Review, Fox Chase Review, and The Philadelphia Bulletin. Mel Brake is the Founder and Executive Director of MPW, a non-profit organization focusing on using the arts to reach children in the Tri-state area. Recently, he appeared in a one act play, “The body Artist” at the Old Academy Players, a non-profit community theater located in the East Fall section of Philadelphia. My last guest, Marsha Marsha Scarbrough, is author of Medicine Dance: One Woman’s Healing Journey into the World of Native American Sweatlodges, Drumming Meditations and Dance Fasts. This book was the first runner up in 2009 for the Zia Award from the New Mexico Press Women, finalist in USA Book News 2007 National Best Book Awards, and the 2006 New Mexico Book Awards. She is a freelance journalist who has written over 75 articles in American Journals, and spent 17 years in Hollywood scheduling, planning and running sets of feature films and prime time television. She has traveled with Buddhist teacher Joan Halifax, danced with movements guru Gabrielle Roth, earned a brown belt in karate from martial arts legend Tak Kubola. participated in Native American healing ceremonies and produced work shops for a Nigerian master drummer.
