Simple Early Diagnostic Test for Upper Gastrointestinal Tract Cancers

A simple urine test may be the key to early detection of cancers of the upper gastrointestinal tract according to research published in the journal Proteomics-Clinical Applications. Researchers compared urine samples from patients with advanced cancer of the upper gastrointestinal tract with urine samples from those who were cancer free. After analyzing for thousands of proteins they identified six particular proteins that were present in 98% of the cancer patients but only 10% of the controls. They then narrowed the molecules down to two proteins-S100A6 and S1009 that were most likely to be in the samples from cancer patients but not in the control samples. They plan to follow up to see if these proteins are in the same levels with patients having early upper gastrointestinal cancer.
