Can Green Tea Inhibit Prostate Cancer Tumor Growth?

A new study presented at the 11th annual AACR International conferences on Frontiers in Cancer prevention Research concluded that men with prostate cancer who consumed green tea prior to undergoing surgery (prostatetectomy) had reductions in markers of inflammation. The researcher said ” This research offers new insights into the mechanisms by which green tea consumption may reduce the risk of prostate cancer by opposing processes such as inflammation, which are associated with prostate cancer growth.”

Sixty seven men with prostate cancer scheduled for prostatect0my were randomly assigned to a group either receiving 6 cups of green tea or water daily for 3 to 8 weeks depending upon their scheduled surgery. Researchers collected blood and urine samples before and after the green tea or water consumption and collected prostate tissue following the pathology exam.

Data showed the prostate specific antigen (PSA) concentrations were significantly lower at the end of the study compared with baseline levels in men consuming green tea . In addition, prostate tissue PSA protein expression was lower in en assigned to green tea consumption+ compared to men drinking water (control group,) at the end of the study. In addition, the immunostaining analysis showed that the nuclear factor kappa B, a marker of inflammation, was significantly lower in the men assigned to consume green tea compared to those in the water drinking group. Further research is planned.
