How Likely Are Smokers of E-Cigarettes to Quit Compared to Tobacco Cigarette Smokers?

Do e-cigarettes help smokers to quit smokingA new study published in the American J of Public Health concluded that smokers who used e-cigarettes were 49% less likely to decrease cigarette use and 59% less likely to quit smoking than smokers who never used them. This concern arose from increased use and lack of safety information.

Results of the study resulted from a population based study that followed 1.000 California smokers over a period of 1 year. Researchers said “Based on the idea that smokers use e-cigarettesĀ to quit smoking, we hypothesized that smokers who used these products would be more successful in quitting.” But the research revealed the contrary. We need further studies to answer why they cannot quit. One hypothesis is that smokers are receiving an increase in nicotine by using these products.” Results showed that daily smokers and women were more likely to have tried e-cigarettes. Although they do not contain tobacco, they do contain volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and ultrafine particles that usually contain aerosolized nicotine. Thus, health officials in California advice people to avoid the use of e-cigarettes and to keep them away from children.
