Research Reports Massage is Effective for Low Back Pain

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Research reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine last week concluded that massage therapy helps ease chronic low back pain and improves functioning. In the study 400 subjects in the Group Health Cooperative who had non-specific low back pain for at least 3 months were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups. These were structural massage, relaxation massage or usual care (what they would have received routinely that was usually medications). The massage groups were given an hour long massage weekly for 10 weeks.
After 10 weeks , over 1/3 of the subjects who received either type of massage said their back pain was better or gone. This compared to 1 in 25 of the controls who reported their back pain was better or gone. In addition, at ten weeks nearly twice as many massage patients as the controls on usual treatment reported functioning significantly better than at the beginning of the treatment program. They reported fewer days in bed, were more active, and used fewer anti-inflammatory medications than the group of usual care.

He believes that treating the whole person including diet, lifestyle, stresses and emotional states, rather than focusing on one single symptom or area of the body is important. Dr Parks will talk about season allergies. More information is available at:

Mr Paradise is the Founder and Chief of Research of Topical Biomedics, a successful company producing natural solutions for pain management. Lou is a Marine Corp helicopter combat and rescue veteran serving two rotations in Viet Nahm. He is very modest about his combat service but his many decorations are for bravery in combat and rescue missions of wounded soldiers, and fellow Marines and for humanitarian rescues of Vietnamese civilians.
During these missions he developed carpal tunnel syndrome that caused severe pain. Using his knowledge of homeopathy, natural medicine, physiology, herbal medicine, and other natural healing modalities he self experimented for relief of his pain. Herbal medicine did not work and homeopathic medicine did slightly. Using his intuitive ability he decided to combine some homeopathic medications and began to see improvement. He refined the product that is now Topricin that treats a wide range of ailments including arthritis, lower back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Mr Paradise has a 25 year history of researching natural medicines, has developed pain management seminars for senior citizens, is considered an expert on rehabilitation and restorative medicine and has appeared as an expert on doctor hosted medical call in radio shows. He has been invited to participate on a committee that interfaces with both the FDA and FTC addressing the growing national interest in natural medicine.

Do Expectations and Preferences Predict Outcome of Acupuncture as Back Pain Therapy

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

In a recent study published in Spine researchers concluded that contrary to previous published studies their results on treatment expectations and preferences of patients were not predictive of treatment outcomes for patients with chronic back pain. This was one of the first studies using acupuncture as the treatment and there were 477 acupuncture naive individuals with chronic back pain as subjects. Subjects were randomized to 1 of 3 acupuncture or simulated acupuncture treatment groups for 10 treatments over a 7 week period and were masked regarding treatment assignments. Before treatment subjects were asked about their expectations of treatment success, impressions, knowledge about acupuncture and treatment preferences. Outcome measures included functional status measured on the Roland score and symptoms bothersome and were measured at 8 and 52 weeks by telephone interviewers who were unaware of which group the person being interviewed was in. Those with high pretreatment expectations for the success of acupuncture were more likely to report higher general expectations of improvement,a preference for acupuncture, had heard that acupuncture was an effective treatment, and had a positive impression of acupuncture. Yet, none of these variables was a significant predictor of improvement of back pain symptoms at 8 or 52 weeks. The researchers concluded that the relationship between expectations and outcomes may be more complex that previously thought.

Vitamin D and Chronic Pain

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

A current study carried out at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota concluded that those with inadequate levels of vitamin D used higher amounts of pain medication. In the study researchers retrospectively studied 267 chronic pain patients who were admitted to the Pain Rehabilitation Center between February and December 2006.The vitamin D level of the subjects was measured at the time of admission and compared with other indicators such as the amount and duration of narcotic pain medication usage; self-reported levels of pain, emotional distress, physical functioning and health perception; and demographic data such as gender, age, diagnosis and body mass index. Results showed that patients with inadequate levels of vitamin D were taking much higher doses of pain medication that was nearly twice as much as those with adequate levels of vitamin D. In addition, this group self reported worst physical functioning, and worse overall health perception. The researchers concluded that further research should document the effects of correcting deficient levels among these individuals.
