My Guest, Dr Leigh Erin Connealy. M.D. will discuss her new book: The Cancer Revolution A Groundbreaking Program to Reverse and Prevent Cancer
Every year, over 1.5 million people in the US are diagnosed with cancer. Nearly everyone has been touched by this disease—be it their own diagnosis or that of a family member or friend. When faced with the news they have cancer, people start searching for safe and effective treatments. In The Cancer Revolution: A Groundbreaking Program to Reverse and Prevent Cancer, Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy shares integrative medicine techniques, lifestyle approaches, and wellness plans for cancer patients.
Dr. Connealy suggests that it’s not enough to undergo traditional treatments alone. Drawing upon the homeopathic, nutritional, bioenergetics, regenerative, and antiaging disciplines, The Cancer Revolution offers six “Revolutionary Cancer Strategies” to provide better management of cancer, including:
Let Food Be Your Medicine |
· Get Moving to Get Well |
Remove Toxins to Boost Your Health |
· Reduce Stress and Reclaim Your Life |
· Harness the Power of Supplements |
· Strengthen Your Immune System with Sleep |
By detoxifying, protecting, and providing nutrients to our bodies, Dr. Connealy suggests that we can all lead longer, higher quality lives—even when faced with this formidable disease. She also highlights how these practices can reduce your risk of getting cancer in the first place.
Leigh Erin Connealy, MD, attended the University of Texas School of Public Health and graduated from the University of Health Sciences Chicago Medical School. Her post-graduate training was completed at the Harbor/UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. She is the founder and medical director of the Center for New Medicine and the Cancer Center for Healing in Irvine, California. My current guest was Jonathon Miller Weisberger who is Guaria de Osa’s founder and steward. Jonathon, or Sparrow as his friends call him was born in Berkeley California and raised from a very young age in the country of Ecuador. Since 2000 he has been living 9 months a year in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula overseeing all aspects of the construction of Guaria de Osa Centre. He is more than our “jefe” he is also Guaria’s principal rainforest guide, plant master, storyteller and much more!
He likes to consider himself a professional beach bum, but this is far from the truth, quite on the contrary, he is an intrepid and knowledgeable rainforest guide and ethnobotanist, with 15 years of ground level experience, having guided over 550 participants into remote regions of Ecuador, Peru and Costa Rica. He also practices and teaches: Tui Na massage, Foot reflexology, Tai Chi and Dao In (Taoist exercises for health), I Ching study, Herbology and is Guaria’s on site Surf Instructor.
Jonathon is an enthusiastic storyteller who’s extensive and knowledgeable understanding of rainforest medicinal flora and indigenous life and world view is unique. He has collaborated as an ethnobotanist and as a rainforest conservation advocate, living for over 10 years (1990-2000) in the Upper Amazon among 5 distinct indigenous peoples communities and tribes.
Co-author of two ethnobotanical, bi-lingual educational books dedicated to indigenous youth in Amazonian Ecuador, Jonathon has published articles in Spanish and English. He has collected over 2500 herbarium specimens deposited in several herbariums in Ecuador and Peru. He has also collaborated on, initiated and overseen innovative rainforest conservation projects including the creation of biological reserves, de-colonization and the demarcation of indigenous territories, buffer zones around national parks, ancestral lands reclamation and cultural heritage revival. He has been influential in saving thousands of hectares of rainforest lands primarily in Ecuador on behalf of the projects. His book Rainforest Medicine:Preserving Indigenous Science & Biodiversity in the Upper Amazon was published in 2013.

A new study announced in an American Physiological Society Press Release concluded that a Chinese herbal extract, triptolide, used on pancreatic cancer cells decreased GRP78 protein in the cells. thereby reducing cancer cell survival and facilitating cancer death. It is believed that GRP78 protects cells from dying , is more abundant in cancer cells, and helps them survive and thrive. Triptolide, an extract of Chinese herb Tirpterygium wilforif, suppresses GRP27 leading to pancreatic cancer cell death. Authors said “Our study shows that although increase expression of GRP78 confers survival advantages in the tumor cells, prolonged exposure to tripolide induces chronic ER stress, which eventually leads to cell death. In this context, inhibition of GRP27 by activation of the ER stress pathway by triptolide offers a novel mechanism for inhiviting the growth and survival of pancreatic cancer cells.”

A new study reported in Daily Digest News and published in the American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology concluded that pancreatic cancer cells may be killed by a chinese herbal extract. A protein known as GPR78 is abundant in cancer cells, compared to normal cells, and is responsible for prevention cells from being destroyed. It is believed this protein helps the pancreatic cancer cells survive despite treatment. Using a Chinese extract from the herb Tirpterygium wilforti, known as triptolide, researchers found it potentially suppresses GRP78, and inevitably cause the death of pancreatic cancer cells. Researchers discovered that the “unfolding protein response (UPR)” that helps boost the cell’s protein-folding ability that allows it to function properly-worked well in triptolide=treated cells, leading to cell death in malfunctioning cells. Researchers further said “Our study shows that although increased expression of GRP78 confers a survival advantage to the tumor cells, prolonged exposurte to triptolide induces chronic ER stress, that eventually leads to cell death. In this context, inhibition of GRP78 by activation of the ER stress pathway by triptolide offers a novel mechanism for inhibiting the growth and survival of pancreatic cancer cells.”

Below you will find the video presentation from the 41st annual convention of the Cancer Control Society a couple weeks ago in which I discuss the natural interventions used when diagnosed with lung cancer 39 years ago. These included such interventions as laetrile, pancreatic enzymes, therapeutic doses of vitamin and minerals, herbs, a vegan type diet, prayer, meditation, affirmations, visualization, serving others, and other holistic interventions. I also discussed the ways I have remain cancer free and healthy over the past 37 years since recovery from cancer, and the value of a holistic approach.
Enjoy.

A new review published in The Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (TOG) concluded that herbal and complementary medicines could be recommended as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The review outlined the advantages and limitations of both approaches. Menopause is associated with estrogen deficiency that can cause an increase in vasomotor symptoms (hot flashed), genitourinary symptoms (vaginal dryness, sexual dysfunction, frequent urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence), and musculoskeletal symptoms (joint pain), and sleep and mood disturbances. Hot flashes is a common symptom that approximately two thirds of postmeniopausal women experience and 20% experience for up to 15 years. HRT is the most effective treatment for hot flashes and will improve symptoms for up to 90% of the women but has side effects such as ;links to breast cancer, blood clots, stroke, and cardiovascular problems. The reviewer said as mqny as 50 to 75% of the postmenopausal women use herbal options , and of the complementary therapies, soy, red clover and black cohost have been the most investigated. Soy is the most common plant containing estrogen, found naturally in food and supplements and research shows a reduction in hot flush symptoms ranging from 20 to 55%. Red clover also contains estrogen, and black cohosh, a plant. both have been shown to reduce hot flush. The author recommended herbs because there are no significant adverse side effects as long as they are used by women who do not have a history of breast cancer, or are not at high risk for breast cancer, and are not taking tamoxifen. However, since herbs are not regulated in may countries the contents of a given product can vary from sample to sample.
