Ken Goubeaux and Carl O Helvie Discuss Cancer.

Sunday, May 5th, 2019

For the show this week, a Facebook friend, Ken Goubeaux,  and I will talk about what we have learned since having Facebook pages and also having cancer either personally (me) or in our families (both of us) and what is needed to successfully overcome cancer. Ken sent the following as background.

“My story started back in October 1991 when my father was first diagnosed with bladder cancer and had it scoped and they took out a tumor which they told him at the time they had to leave just a stem, because they didn’t want to cut into the bladder wall for obvious reason. After this surgery they gave him radium treatments which always made him feel bloated. So long story short he never really felt it necessary to change his life style or diet. But was fortunate to survive cancer two more time and the third being a tumor up by the breast bone which they decided to fry it with radiation. Then it was only a year later it came back. I remember to this day the day being February 24 2005 My mom and sister took him to Ohio State and found out it was terminal. They told him a year it was Leiomyosarcoma; rare type only 4 in a million get this type. So it was nearly the end of the dx when I went to the Shrine in Carey Ohio. When I myself was going through severe depression and went there to pray for a peace of mind. Because it seemed about every time I was about dig my self out of the dark hole I fell deeper back into it. So on the way from mass that day I was handed a vision for my blog. Which I thought how brilliant but at the time I didn’t know how to type let alone computers or the internet but it didn’t stop me. And boy after that date I learned that when the student is ready the teachers would appear. From Mant Prowg in Kettering at half price books. That Chinamen owning a business that came here and went through his own form of culture shock because of the American Diet provided me the basis for Solitarius.org.” In addition to his Facebook page Solitarius.org,  Ken also manages Cannabis Saves People and Rosa’s Corner. He is from Ohio and graduated from Northwestern College in Lima. More information is available at:  www.facebook.com/ken.goubeaux

Sunday, March 3rd, 2019

Connecting people with hope  the way a sunflower always stands tall and connects with the sun.

My first guest, Dee Dee Ferguson, founded Connect4Hope after her mother was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2017. To give her mom and entire family hope, DeeDee wanted to find and share stories of others who had successfully healed from cancer, but she didn’t know where to turn. This led her to create Connect4Hope, where she shares stories of people who have successfully conquered terminal illness, in order to provide hope and inspiration to others. Through Connect4Hope, DeeDee is striving to unite people facing common challenges by eradicating fear and replacing it with hope. Her goal is to provide a virtual bridge to connect and support people in common situations worldwide and empower them with positivity, optimism and inspiration so they can survive their current health crises and thrive.

DeeDee grew up in a tight-knit New England community, which provided her with a great appreciation for relationships and the natural way people come together to support one another when challenges occur. Prior to discovering her true calling, she earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, a master’s degree from Columbia University and worked in Corporate America for 20 years. Dr Brian Wilson’s new book on Linking Science and Spirituality.

Sunday, September 23rd, 2018

John E. Fetzer and the Quest for the New Age

By Brian C. Wilson, Ph. D.

New Book Reveals How Radio Pioneer, Media Mogul and Detroit Tigers’ Owner John Fetzer Fostered the Marriage of Science and Spirituality Through the Decades

While he was building the radio/TV/cable empire that fueled his wealth and enabled him to become sole owner of the Detroit Tigers from 1961 to 1983, few knew that John E. Fetzer was actually quietly and devotedly using spiritual principles and practices to guide his business growth, as well as funding some of the seminal research on consciousness in America which sought to reconcile science and spirituality.

Fetzer attributed his success to his spiritual practices and awareness of higher consciousness. In fact, Fetzer employed meditation, psychic consultants, pendulums, water dowsing and other “occult” practices regularly in his decision making—which he considered major factors in his success.  The new book John E. Fetzer and the Quest for the New Age (Wayne State University Press, 2018) by Brian C. Wilson, Ph. D, reveals Fetzer’s extraordinary life, while chronicling the birth of the New Age movement.

Brian C. Wilson, Ph.D

Brian C. Wilson, author of the new book, John E. Fetzer and the Quest for the New Age, is a professor of American religious history in the Department of Comparative Religion at Western Michigan University (WMU). He holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

After writing an award-winning book on cereal inventor and the leading Seventh-day Adventist of his time, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, the Fetzer Institute invited Wilson to write a full-length spiritual biography of its founder, John E. Fetzer. The Kalamazoo-based Fetzer was a radio pioneer, media mogul, and long-time owner of the Detroit Tigers baseball team. But what most people didn’t know was that John E. Fetzer was quietly behind-the-scenes a significant figure in the consciousness movement and a spiritual seeker of the first order. For more than 60 years, he sought ways to open the doors of higher consciousness, spiritual empowerment, paranormal insights and energy medicine to humanity through spiritual study, science and the influence of the wealth at his disposal.

In John E. Fetzer and the Quest for the New Age, Wilson not only explores the evolution of Fetzer’s beliefs, but how he put them into action by permanently endowing three funds that will foster research into the scientific/spiritual interface for years to come, and help cultivate a more peaceful, loving and inclusive world founded on the principle that we are all connected through one infinite force.

Meditation/Yoga Reverse DNA Response Underlying Stress

Wednesday, June 21st, 2017

A new study published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology reviewed over a decade of studies  analyzing how our genes are affected by different Mind-Body Interventions and and concluded meditation, yoga and Tai Chi don’t simply relax us, they can reverse the molecular reactions in our DNA which cause ill-health and depression. Researchers reviewed 18 studies with 846 participants over 11 years and found a pattern of molecular changes that happened in the body as a result of the mind-body interventions.  Those changes benefited the mental and physical health of the participants.

When a person is exposed to a stressful situation, their sympathetic nervous system is triggered  that in turn increases production of af a molecule called nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) that regulates how the genes are expressed. KF-kB translates stress by activating genes to produce protein called cytokines that cause inflammation at the cellular level-a reaction that is useful for short term fight or flight reactions. But if this persists it lead to a higher risk of cancer. accelerated aging, and psychiatric disorders like depression.  Researchers found, however, that people who practice mind-body interventions exhibit the opposite effect-that is, a decrease in production of NF-kB and cytolines, leading to a reversal of the pro-inflammatory gene expression pattern and a reduction in the risk of inflammation-related diseases and conditions.

Researchers said “These activities are leaving what we call a molecular signature in our cells, which reverse the effect that stress or anxiety would have on the body by changing how our genes are expressed. Put simply, MBIs cause the brain to steer our DNA processes along a path which improves our well-being.” “More needs to be done to understand these effects in greater depth, for example how they compare with other healthy interventions like exercise or nutrition. But this is an important foundation to build on to help future researchers explain the benefits of increasingly popular mind-body activities.”
