One alcohol drink a day (small glass wine or beer-10 gms alcohol) increases pre-menopausal breast cancer risk by 5 percent and post-menopausal breast cancer risk by 9 percent according to new research reported by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund. Researchers also found that vigorous exercise such as running or fast bicycling decreases the risk of both pre and post-menopausal breast cancer ,They also confirmed earlier findings that moderate exercises decrease the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer that is the most comm,on type of breast cancer. Researchers said “With this comprehensive and up to date report the evidence is clear, Having as physically active lifestyle, maintaining a healthy weight throughout life and limiting alcohol–these are all steps women can take to lower their risk.”
This report analyzed 119 studies, including data on 12 million women and 260,000 cases of breast cancer. The study found the equivalent of 10 gm of alcohol a day increased the risk and the standard drink is 14 gm of alcohol. specifics of exercise and cancer risk found follow: pre-menopausal women who were the most active had a 17 percent lower risk and post-menopausal women had a 10 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer compared to those who were the least active. Moderate activity such as walking and gardening gave a 13 percent lower risk when compared to the most vs least active women for developing cancer.
Other findings included: being overweight or obese increases the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer; women who breast fed were are lower risk of breast cancer; and the great adult weight gain the greater the post-menopausal breast cancer risk. There was limited evidence for the following findings that must be repeated, 1) non-starchy vegetables lower the risk for estrogen-receptor (ER) negative breast cancer that is a less common but a more challenging type to treat. ) 2) dairy, diets high in calcium and foods containing carotenoids seemed to lower risk of breast cancer. Carrots, apricots, spinach and kale are all foods high in carotenoids and should be studied for their health value;

A new study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology concluded that the rate of developing esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) nearly doubles in those who smoke and drink compared to those who only smoke or drink. Authors stated “Our study suggests that not only do alcohol and tobacco play an important role in the development of esophageal cancer, the combination of their use markedly increases their potential as carcinogens.” Researchers carried out a systematic search of the literature on multiple electronic data bases for population-based-case-controlled or cohort studies of ESCC that assessed the effect of tobacco and/or alcohol. To estimate the interaction of alcohol, and /or tobacco on esophageal cancer on a multiplicative scale a synergy factor was calculated from studies for the burden of esophageal cancer on those who smoked and/or drank. The researchers concluded “Our systematic review confirmed the expected exposure-dependent relationship of both alcohol and tobacco with the risk of ESCC. as alcohol use and tobacco use were both independent risk factors for the development of ESCC.”

New research published online in Cancer presented results
answering questions of breast cancer patients about what their daughters might do to reduce their risk of breast cancer. They found that among adolescent girls with a family history of breast cancer (or maternal benign breast disease-a known risk factor for breast cancer) there was a significant association between the amount of alcohol consumed and increased risk of benign breast disease as young women.
Information from the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS) including females age 9 to 15 years in 1966 and who completed annual questionnaires from 1966 to 2001 and again in 2003, 2005, and 2007 were analyzed. In the final two surveys, participants between the ages of 18 and 27 at the time reported whether or not they had ever been diagnosed with benign breast disease. There were 67 who had this diagnoses as confirmed by breast biopsies and another 6,741 reported they had not had this diagnoses. In addition, breast cancer and benign breast cancer disease diagnoses were obtained from mothers, and maternal aunts and grandmothers.
Young women whose mothers or aunts had breast cancer were over 2 times as likely to have a diagnosis of benign breast disease as compared to the women in the control group (without family history). In addition, among adolescent girls who had mothers, aunts, or grandmothers with breast cancer , the more alcohol the girls consumed the more likely they were to develop benign breast disease. The authors said these results were consistent with results found for older women and alcohol use and concluded ” Our study suggests that adolescent females already at higher risk for breast cancer, in light of their family history, should be aware that avoiding alcohol may reduce their risk for benign breast disease as young women, which might be accompanied by reduced breast cancer risk later in life.”
