Can Antioxidants Help Recover Efficiency of Aging Arteries?

Wednesday, May 14th, 2014 logo1267406_mdIn a new study published in the Journal of Physiology researchers concluded that an antioxidant that targets cell structures –mitochondria- may be able to reverse some of the negative effects of aging on arteries and thereby reduce the risk of heart disease. After giving mice that were the equivalent age as a 70 or 80 year old human an antioxidant known as MitoG for four weeks, their arteries functioned as well as the arteries of mice with an equivalent human age of 25 to 35 years. Previous studies looked at whether taking antioxidants supplements long term could improve vascular function in patients with cardiovascular disease by restoring balanced levels of super oxides but results of these studies showed the method was ineffective. It was believed that results were due to the antioxidants not getting to the right places. This study differed by adding a molecule to ubiquinone (CoEnzyme Q10) a naturally occurring enzyme that then became concentrated in the m mitochondria. Thus, the strategy of specifically targeting mitochondria may be effective in improving our arteries as we age.
