Cheryl showing her sutures from 2009 operation.
Cheryl Boyles tells us her story below. In June 2000 I was 33 years old, working as a wildlife biologist in Oregon, married to a wonderful husband for 10 years, and the mother of two amazing sons that were 1 and 3 years old. I was loving life; then overnight my life changed. I began having headaches that felt like my skull was going to explode. An MRI showed my brain was hemorrhaging. I went into surgery and an acorn sized grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) brain tumor was removed. I was told I had less than a year to live.I quit my job, and focused on being a mother and fighting brain cancer. I went through radiation, but chose not to take chemotherapy. The chemo would only add 3 months to my life, but quality of life would be miserable.
I decided to take more of a natural “alternative” approach, trying to boost my own immune system. My good cells outnumbered my bad cancer cells! I started eating organic, following a low carbohydrate diet, exercising, simplifying life and nursing a positive attitude, taking acupuncture, many supplements, cannabis, some “off label” prescriptions (like Metformin), and most of all leaning on God for strength which feeds me with hope.
Over the 16 years fighting the terminal brain cancer, I’ve unfortunately was hit with six recurrences. The fact that I have survived is unbelievable. My doctors even say so. Most people with the GBM die with their first recurrence, which usually happens within the first few years. To fight my recurrences, I mostly focused on my alternative actions, but also continued with some of the standard treatments. I’ve been through six brain craniotomies, 6 week of conformation radiation, over 3 ½ years on the milder chemo called Temodar, and also what is called Gamma Knife radiation.
Taking this approach of combining many alternative and standard treatments, trying to hit the cancer from many angels, has become known at a “cocktail” approach. It seems to be working for me, not that I’m cured, but I’m still alive and loving life. Over the sixteen years I’ve had over 100 MRIs, and it’s great to say that my last MRI was clear, no seen GBM.I have become known in the “brain tumor world” as a long term survivor. Patients and caregivers from around the USA and around the world contact me wanting to know “How do you do it?” So I’ve put together a web page www.cherylbroyles-gbm.com, wrote a book called Life’s Mountains, and made some videos hoping to reach out and encourage others.
Now my husband and I have been married 26 years, growing stronger together. My two boys are now 17 and 20 years old, both wanting to become wildlife biologists like mom and dad. And over the years I’ve been blessed with many things. Seeing life anew, learning to be content regardless of circumstances, enduring through the challenges, and living life in the moment.

A new study published online in the journal PLoS One concluded that preliminary results show that melatonin, a hormone that regulates our sleep and awake cycles, may have the potential to inhibit the growth and cell production nd block the formation of new blood vessels in
ER-negative breast cancer models. Researchers said “These early stage research results with the melatonin drug in a triple-negative breast cancer animal model achieved in our lab has not been seen anywhere else.”
To determine the effectiveness of of melatonin on tumor growth, researchers evaluated the action of melatonin on angiogenesis (f0rmation of new blood vessels) in ER-negative breast cancer in vitro and in vitro using cells and mouse models respectively, Mice were randomly assigned to the study or control group and the study group received treatment of melatonin one hour before lights were turned out for 21 days. The time coincided with the time that cells are most sensitive to the hormone. . At the end of the 21 nights researchers used single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to determine whetehr the melatonin therapy effectively decreased the size of the implanted human triple negative breast cancer in the mouse model and if there was any change in the formation of new blood vessels. In addition, tumor volume was measured weekly and and tumor tissue was analyzed at the end of treatment.
None of the treated mice showed any loss of weight and lethargy during the treatment and most showed excessive movement with no aggressive or irritable behavior. After 21 days the treated mice showed significantly smaller tumors but the mean tumor volume increased significantly in the control group. These results were replicated in the cell model. The results indicate that melatonin may have the potential as a therapeutic agent for breast cancer. However, the researchers caution that the research is in a very early stage and results are not yet ready to be translated for patient use.

A new study published in the journal Sleep Science reached similar conclusions to previous studies that there is a link between light at night (LAN) and cancer. Previous studies by the researchers at the Center for Interdisciplinary Chronobiological Research at the University of Haifa showed that people who lived in areas with more night time illumination were more at risk for prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. In this follow up study they hypothesised that LAN harms the production of melatonin, a hormone released from the pineal gland during the dark and linked to the body’s cyclical night-day activities and seasonality and when this hormone is suppressed there is a rise in cancer cases.
To establish or refute this hypothesis the researchers studies 4 groups of lab mice that were injected with cancerous cells and subjected to one of the following: 1) long days of 16 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness; 2) same long days but were treated with melatonin; 3) short days of 8 hours light and 16 hours of darkness; and 4) short day but during the dark hours was exposed to a half hour interval of light.
Results showed those exposed to short days had the smallest cancerous growths (average 0.85 cubic centimeters) while those exposed to the interval LAN during dark hours had larger growths (average 1.84 cubic centimeter) and those exposed to long days had even larger growths (average of 5.92 cubic centimeters). Results also showed that suppression of melatonin had an effect on tumor development. Tumors in the mice exposed to long days but treated with melatonin were smaller (average 0.62 cubic centimeter) which was similar to the size of the tumors in those exposed to short days. The death rate of mice treated with melatonin was also lower than those who did not receive it. Thus, they concluded that their results show a link between LAN and cancer and the suppression of melatonin and cancer growth.

On Saturday, Dr Arlene Donar talked about melatonin as an anti-cancer hormone. Several studies suggest a connection between melatonin and cancer. Researchers at Harvard evaluated almost 150 women with invasive breast cancer and just over 290 without cancer as part of the Nurse Health Study. They measured the melatonin urine levels from morning samples and found that the women with the highest melatonin levels had the lowest risk of cancer.
In another study researchers used melatonin supplements with rats having advanced and untreated breast cancer . Given daily this significantly increased survival in the rats. They concluded that the results suggest that melatonin is beneficial in the survival with advanced breast cancer.
In a third study Mills et al at the McMasters University in Hamilton, Canada did a systematic review of randomized control trials and meta-analysis of melatonin in the treatment of cancer. They included 10 randomized controlled studies published between 1992 and 2003 that included 643 patients. and found that melatonin reduced the risk of death at 1 year and further, the effects were consistent across melatonin dose and type of cancer. No severe side effects were reported. They concluded that the substantial reduction in risk of death, low adverse events reported, and low cost related to this treatment suggests great potential for melatonin in the treatment of cancer.
These are a few of the studies published to date. Most researchers recognize the importance of further studies.
