Twenty Two Year Stage II Hodgkins Lymphoma Survivor, Roslyn Franken

Sunday, September 10th, 2017

Roslyn Franken is a passionate inspirational speaker, author and proud cancer survivor who knows about the power of positivism and emotional resilience in the face of adversity. Her mother survived the concentration camps of Nazi Europe and her father survived the Nagasaki atomic bomb as a prisoner of war in Japan. At age 56, her mother was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and with an amazing “Keep Going” attitude lived for 21 years when she was only given two years tops to live. Her father suffered a massive heart attack at age 67 and with his “Never give up” attitude lived till age 94 when he was told he would be lucky if he made it to 82. When diagnosed with cancer at only 29, Roslyn turned to her parents’ positive “Keep going” and  “Never Give Up” attitude as inspiration in her fight to beat cancer and become a long-time survivor.
At 39, ten years after surviving cancer, and at her heaviest weight, Roslyn had enough. She decided that as a cancer survivor she could not allow herself to continue gaining weight and potentially putting herself at risk of cancer and other often diet, lifestyle and weight-related diseases. How she lost the weight and changed her life is outlined in her easy-to-read and easy-to-follow self-help book, The A List: 9 Guiding Principles for Healthy Eating and Positive Living.
In giving presentations about THE A LIST  book, Roslyn mentioned her parents’ life as well as her cancer journey that both inspired her path to weight loss and improved self-care. People were so inspired by these brief mentions that they wanted to hear more.

And so, Roslyn set to task once again and wrote her second book entitled MEANT TO BE: A TRUE STORY OF MIGHT, MIRACLES AND TRIUMPH OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT.  In this book, Roslyn reveals the true story of her parents amazing survival, resilience and triumph as unlikely Holocaust and Atomic bomb survivors who find true love against all odds and overcome life-threatening health issues later in life. She also includes the profound lessons she learned from her parents about survival, resilience and positive mental attitude while fighting to survive cancer at the young age of 29.

A documentary was made about her parents’ story and Roslyn’s book, Meant to Be, is currently being adapted for production as a feature film.

As a professional inspirational speaker, Roslyn  delivers a heartfelt presentation to share highlights from her book, Meant to Be. She speaks for conferences, student events, community events, faith-based / religious events, senior groups, fundraiser / charity events, banquets / galas and other group events.

Roslyn is also co-author of Death Can Wait: Stories from Cancer Survivors, a fundraising book for cancer research and cancer patient programs.

She has been a guest on numerous television and radio shows and featured in newspapers and magazines across North America and abroad.

She has a Masters degree in Human Systems Intervention (the study of how people self-learn and change as individuals and in groups) from Concordia University in Montreal,

Jeffrey Smith is an international bestselling author, award winning filmmaker, Executive Director of the Institute of Responsible Technology, and the leading spokesperson  on the health dangers of GMO’s.

The most recognized consumer advocate promoting healthier non-GMO choices, Jeffrey Smith’s meticulous research documents how biotech companies continue to mislead legislators and safety officials to put the health of society at risk and the environment in peril. His work expertly summarizes why the safety assessments conducted by the FDA and regulators worldwide teeter on a foundation of outdated science and false assumptions, and why genetically engineered foods must urgently become our nation’s top food safety priority.

In 2012 Smith’s feature-length documentary Genetic Roulette, The Gamble of Our Lives was awarded Movie of the Year (Solari Report) and Transformational Film of the Year (AwareGuide). Described as a “life-changer” and seen by millions worldwide, the film links genetically engineered food to toxic and allergic reactions, infertility, digestive disorders, and numerous problems that have been on the rise in the US population since genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were introduced.

His books include: Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies about the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You’re Eating, the world’s bestseller on GMOs, and Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods, the authoritative work on GMO health dangers.

A dynamic keynote speaker, Mr. Smith has lectured in more than 40 countries, counseled leaders from every continent, and has been quoted by thousands of news outlets including: The New York Times, Washington Post, BBC World Service, The Times (London), the Associated Press, Reuters News Service, the LA Times, Time Magazine and the New Scientist. He appears frequently on radio and television on shows such as the Dr. Oz Show, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Doctors, CBS News, Fox News, CNBC, NPR and Democracy Now.

Mr. Smith is the founding executive director of The Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT), the most comprehensive source of GMO health risk information for consumers, policy makers, and healthcare professionals. IRT’s educational programs are driving the tipping point of consumer rejection against GMOs, which is already starting to push genetically engineered ingredients out of the market in the US.

Use Alternatives to Reduce Type 2 Diabetes Risks

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

John LaGrace, National Awareness Director, DrugWatch.com was kind enough to provide the following guest blog written by his staff on alternatives to reduce Type 2 diabetes. I hope you enjoy it.

__________________________________________________________

Doctor Mark Hyman, author of the “The Blood Sugar Solution,” described diabetes as a foodborne illness. While the exact cause of diabetes isn’t well understood there is a recognizable link between fat buildup from unhealthy foods and the onset of the disease. The American Diabetes Association says that about 50 percent of men and 70 percent of women are obese when they are diagnosed.

This link between obesity and type 2 diabetes opens up the door to exciting possibilities for naturally fighting symptoms. Even if a person isn’t obese, adjusting their amount of exercise and beginning a healthy diet can drastically reduce symptoms. Doctors say that patients only need to lose 5 to 10 percent of their body weight to see an improvement.

The Look AHEAD study showed that people with type 2 diabetes benefit the most from natural treatments when they seek out the help of professionals like dieticians and personal trainers. Doctors should also be consulted before attempting to modify your exercise or diet to treat diabetes. With a combination of expert guidance you can develop a well-rounded and effective treatment plan. In the Look AHEAD study people with type 2 diabetes who received professional guidance were able to keep significant weight off consistently, while those who didn’t saw fewer results.

Medical studies show a combination of diet and exercise are the most effective natural treatments to reduce diabetes symptoms. Exercise helps sensitize the body to insulin, which lowers blood sugar. It also reduces harmful cholesterol, which reduces the risk of congestive heart failure.

Patients should begin their lifestyle changes progressively. After talking to a Doctor they can begin to make conservative changes in diet and exercise, and then see how their body reacts. By pacing themselves people avoid potentially over stressing their body, or lowering their blood sugar too rapidly. As the body adjusts to a new health routine people can gradually increase the aggressiveness of their natural treatment.

The health risks of congestive heart failure and stroke are serious side effects associated with diabetes medications are serious and should be addressed. In fact, the FDA has issued a black-box warning on type 2 diabetes medication, Actos, because of its link with congestive heart failure. This has resulted in many users filing an Actos lawsuit against the manufacturer.

Having type 2 diabetes may make changing diet and regular exercise more difficult, but with enough discipline people may actually be able to beat the disease. One British study showed that with dramatic lifestyle intervention type 2 diabetes can actually be reversed in some patients.

The American Diabetes Association says that people can have an impact on their symptoms by starting to exercise 30 minutes a day for five days a week. Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous either. Working around the house or walking is sufficient to improve heart health and reduce the risk of diabetes related symptoms. Be sure to warm up before jumping into a fitness routine, and always consult your doctor about beginning natural treatment.

A new study published in the August issue of The Journal of Family Practice concluded there is no evidence to support colon cleansing (colonic irrigation) and they can cause serious side effects ranging from cramping to renal failure and death. The researchers reviewed 20 studies published in the medical literature over the last decade that reported little evidence of benefits but an abundance of side effects including cramping, bloating, electrolyte imbalance, nausea. vomiting, renal failure and liver toxicity associated with some herbs used. The authors note the increase interest in colon cleansing offered at spas or clinics by practitioners without medical training.

Light Therapy for Early Laryngeal Cancer May Save The Voice

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

logo1267406_md

A new study presented at the Triological Society’s Combined Section Meeting in Arizona last Saturday concluded that light therapy (photodynamic therapy) helps preserve the voice and vocal cord function in patients with early stage laryngeal cancer. This is a good alternative to radiation and surgery that are known to have more functional impairment on vocal cord function. The researchers from Henry Ford Hospital say they have performed more than 200 procedures that are more than any other hospital in Michigan and the therapy works by destroying deadly cancer cells without damaging surrounding healthy cells. Using a powerful laser and a non-toxic, light activated drug called PHOTOFRIN, the laser activates the drug and causes a reaction in the cancer cells destroying them.

In their study on 10 patients using photodynamic therapy patients demonstrated significant impairment of vocal cord function that subsided in a few weeks and months. Other minor side effects included photosensitivity that made them more sensitive to light and suceptible to severe sunburn lasting about 4 weeks post treatment. Some patients also experienced temporary hoarseness.
