Sunday, November 18th, 2012

My guests for Saturday are Carmelina Vargas (left) and Tamara St John.  Both are breast cancer survivors.

My first guest, Carmelina Vargas is a singer/songwriter, warrior against cancer and aspiring author. The daughter of a merengue musician and born in Barahona, Dominican Republic, she now lives and works in New York City.

Carmelina first appeared on the national music scene in the summer of 2008 with the release of her first single Mueve Las Caderas,” a rhythmic modern Pop/R&B track infused with a tropical style. ASCAP Latino highlighted Carmelina’s debut album titled “Morena” (Morena Records, June 9, 2009) as one of the most anticipated albums of the coming year.

As things were heating up for Carmelina, she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. After undergoing surgery and treatments, and being true to the fighter and positive spirit that she is, Carmelina returns to her music and her fans as a survivor. Using her music as a platform, Carmelina actively promotes breast cancer awareness through performances at numerous events for the American Cancer Society and her endeavors received national recognition from Congressman Charles B Rangel of New York’s 15th District.

Carmelina’s survivor story, professional accomplishments and musical talent have been featured on GlobalGrind.com.  New York Socialite Examiner, Corrientelantina,.com,  Alithingsgirl.net, and artist of the week on Reverbnation, as well as in the pages of DTN Magazine, El Especial Newspaper and Metro International.  At the end of her interview we will hear her latest song “Alegria” or joy released July of this year.

My second guest, Tamara St. John holds a Masters in Business Administration with a dual concentration in Accounting and Finance.  She is currently an Adjunct Professor of Accounting and Financial Management at two universities in Southern California.  After finding Breast Cancer in 2009 and healing it using only alternative methods;   Tamara started her business “Alternative Health Solutions” with a website address at www.tamarastjohn.com and a facebook page at www.facebook.com/alternativehealthsolutions1.

She has been featured on various radio shows; such as, The Robert Scott Bell Show, Homegrown Health with Joni Cox, and Dr. Judy Seeger’s radio show, amongst others.  Tamara is also a published writer, having written for Nutricula magazine online.  She also currently conducts consultations with those who want motivational support with the alternative Cancer plan she created; “Defeat Cancer Now.”  Tamara is currently writing a book about her cancer battle, the alternative methods she used, and her structured plan to defeating Cancer now.  Her motto is; “You Can Achieve Optimum Health through God’s Pharmacy.”

My first guest is Dr Francisco Contreras, whose father, the late Dr. Ernesto Contreras, Sr. opened the Oasis of Hope Hospital in 1963 and initiated what would become a healing tradition known as the Total Cancer Care Approach. Dr. Contreras is recognized in multiple publications as a pioneer in body, mind, and spirit medicine. At the foundation of his philosophy were two principles inspired by Hippocrates, the father of medicine, and Jesus Christ, The Great Physician: 1) First, do no harm; 2) Love your patient as you love yourself.

Because of his philosophy, Dr. Contreras taught his medical staff to never prescribe treatments that would destroy the quality of life of the patient. He also insisted that Oasis of Hope physicians offer therapies that they would be willing to take if in the same circumstances. His emphasis on the doctor-patient relationship, along with his integration of natural and conventional therapies with emotional and spiritual counseling, were the principle reasons why more than 100,000 patients from 55 nations have come to Oasis of Hope for treatment over the last 45 years. The Oasis of Hope continues under this same philosophy today under the direction of Dr Ernesto Contreras’ son, Dr Francisco Contreras.

Francisco Contreras, MD – Graduated with honors from the prestigious School of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He continued his studies at the University of Vienna, Austria, where he specialized in Surgical Oncology and graduated with honors once more. Dr. Contreras is a cancer specialist recognized as an expert at combining conventional and alternative therapies with emotional and spiritual support. Through his practice, books, interviews and conferences, he shares easy and practical ways to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and chronic illnesses.

As the Board Director and Chairman of the Oasis of Hope Health Group, Dr. Contreras oversees the treatment of 400 cancer patients annually. He received personal instruction from his father, alternative medicine pioneer Dr. Ernesto Contreras, Sr. and has dedicated his career to treating his patients effectively and caringly.
