Colorectal Cancer Risk Increased with Nitrates in the Water.

Friday, March 2nd, 2018

A new study carried out in Denmark and published in the International Journal of Cancer  concluded that there is an increase risk of colorectal cancer in connection with nitrates in drinking water. The dangerous rates are also at concentrations far below the current drinking water standards and are mainly seen in private water supplies. It is often from fertilizer used in agricultural production.

Researchers calculated how much nitrates the subjects were exposed to where they lived and compared this to information about cancer diagnosis. A total of 2.7 million people were followed between 1978 and 2011. Nitrate was measured in more than 200,000 drinking water samples, making the study the largest and most detail in the area.

Yearly about 5,000 Danes contract colorectal cancer. In this study people who were exposed to the highest concentrations of nitrates in drinking water (about 9.3 mg per liter of water) had a 15% greater risk of getting colorectal cancer when compared to those who had the least exposure(less than 1.3 mg per liter of water). The current standard for nitrates in Denmark is 50 mg per liter of water but in the study the colorectal cancer rates were already seen in those drinking 4 mg per liter of water. The standard set complies with that set by the WHO. Changes in these standards should be made.

Can a Capsule w/Cameras perform Colonoscopy?

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2017

A new study reported in Science Digest  says “the noninvasive alternative to colonoscopy is as easy as swallowing a pill.”  In the procedure the patient ingests a capsule containing two miniature cameras and takes pictures of as as it travels through the digestive tract, it takes pictures and transmits them to a recorder the patient wears on his belt.  After traveling through the digestive tract the capsule with cameras  is excreted and flushed down the toilet. The camera identify polyps the same as the colonoscopy except the colonoscopy removes the polyps that are precancerous during the procedure.  With the camera a colonoscopy will be necessary if polyps are identified but otherwise the patient in not subjected to the invasive procedure. Preparation for the procedure is the same as for a colonoscopy that includes a bowel cleanse. However, the procedure requires no anesthesia, is painless, the patient does not have to take the day off for the procedure. nor arrange for transportation to and from the procedure. The new procedure has been approved by the FSA for people who are not eligible for colonoscopy for the following reasons: 1) the patients colon makes it difficult to guide a colonoscope through the entir colon, or 2) the patient has lower gastrointestinal bleeding but is not suitable for a colonoscopy because of the risk posed for complications due to age or other reasons.
