Twenty Two Year Stage II Hodgkins Lymphoma Survivor, Roslyn Franken

Roslyn Franken is a passionate inspirational speaker, author and proud cancer survivor who knows about the power of positivism and emotional resilience in the face of adversity. Her mother survived the concentration camps of Nazi Europe and her father survived the Nagasaki atomic bomb as a prisoner of war in Japan. At age 56, her mother was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and with an amazing “Keep Going” attitude lived for 21 years when she was only given two years tops to live. Her father suffered a massive heart attack at age 67 and with his “Never give up” attitude lived till age 94 when he was told he would be lucky if he made it to 82. When diagnosed with cancer at only 29, Roslyn turned to her parents’ positive “Keep going” and  “Never Give Up” attitude as inspiration in her fight to beat cancer and become a long-time survivor.
At 39, ten years after surviving cancer, and at her heaviest weight, Roslyn had enough. She decided that as a cancer survivor she could not allow herself to continue gaining weight and potentially putting herself at risk of cancer and other often diet, lifestyle and weight-related diseases. How she lost the weight and changed her life is outlined in her easy-to-read and easy-to-follow self-help book, The A List: 9 Guiding Principles for Healthy Eating and Positive Living. 
In giving presentations about THE A LIST  book, Roslyn mentioned her parents’ life as well as her cancer journey that both inspired her path to weight loss and improved self-care. People were so inspired by these brief mentions that they wanted to hear more.

And so, Roslyn set to task once again and wrote her second book entitled MEANT TO BE: A TRUE STORY OF MIGHT, MIRACLES AND TRIUMPH OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT.  In this book, Roslyn reveals the true story of her parents amazing survival, resilience and triumph as unlikely Holocaust and Atomic bomb survivors who find true love against all odds and overcome life-threatening health issues later in life. She also includes the profound lessons she learned from her parents about survival, resilience and positive mental attitude while fighting to survive cancer at the young age of 29.

A documentary was made about her parents’ story and Roslyn’s book, Meant to Be, is currently being adapted for production as a feature film.

As a professional inspirational speaker, Roslyn  delivers a heartfelt presentation to share highlights from her book, Meant to Be. She speaks for conferences, student events, community events, faith-based / religious events, senior groups, fundraiser / charity events, banquets / galas and other group events.

Roslyn is also co-author of Death Can Wait: Stories from Cancer Survivors, a fundraising book for cancer research and cancer patient programs.

She has been a guest on numerous television and radio shows and featured in newspapers and magazines across North America and abroad.

Does your Place of Residence influence your Immune System?

In a recent issue of Trends in Immunology researchers concluded where and with whom we live account for 60 to 80 per cent of the differences between individual immune systems, while genetics account for the rest. Like fingerprints, immune systems vary from person to person and despite our unique set of genes that help us respond to infections our diet, quality of air, food, stress levels, sleep patterns and lifestyle choices have a stronger effect on our immune system. The researchers said “Just like it took a while to crack the genetic code, we’re finally starting to crack the immune code, and we’re shifting away from the simplistic idea that there is only one type of immune system. diversity isn’t just programmed into our genes–it emerges from how our genes respond to their environment.”

They say that long-term infections are responsible for most of the differences between individual immune systems and use the example of herpes or shingles. In these processes the virus has more opportunity to interact with the immune system and these interactions slowly change the cellular makeup of the immune system and make it more sensitive to that specific virus but also easier for other infections to move past its defenses. People who do not have these infections don’t experience cellular changes, and even with the occasional cold or fever, their immune system stays relatively stable over time.

The exception is an elderly person when our immune system reacts differently to threats. This is related partially to the thymus organ that gradually stops producing T cells, which are made to fight infections. Without these cells, older people are more likely to get sick and less likely to respond to vaccines. In addition, to the lack of T cells there seems to be other changes in the way the immune system reacts. For example, the researchers say “A lot of diseases we associate with aging have an inflammatory component, which suggests there is likely immune involvement.”  The further say differences can be overcome and studies of people living together show that air-quality, fod, stress level, sleep patterns, and lifestyle choices had a strrong combined effect on immune responses and couples who cohabitate had more similar immune systems compared with the general public.  Researchers now plan to study how changing the envorinbment could purposefully shape our immune system and potentially effect our health.

Can Men with a High Genetic Chance of Bowel Cancer lower their Risk with a Healthy Lifestyle?

Recent research published in the journal Genetics in Medicine concluded that men with a high genetic risk of developing bowel cancer over the next 25 years could have a lower of developing the disease if they have a healthy lifestyle. They continue that men of 50 who have a high risk of developing bowel cancer have a 29 per cent risk of developing the disease within 25 years and by living healthy the risk could drop as low as 13 per cent.

In the study genetic and lifestyle risk factors were combined to help find men at the highest risk of developing bowel cancer.  Mathematical models of 37 different factors that could put people at risk of cancer were used to calculate how likely it was for a man to be diagnosed with bowel cancer over the following 25 years. Factors included inherited genetic faults increasing the risk of bowel cancer, and lifestyle factors affecting that risk such as consumption of alcohol, red meat, and fruit and vegetables, body mass index, smoking habits, physical activity, aspirin use, and inflammatory bowel disease. Based upon their findings they estimated 610 cases of bowel cancer could be prevented over the following 25 years if 10,000 men in the highest risk category had the healthiest lifestyle.  For men in the lowest risk group, 70 cases of bowel cancer could be prevented.

Researchers concluded “Bowel cancer is one of the biggest cancer killers and the number of cases is going up in the Western world. We have made big strides in our understanding of the genetic and lifestyle factors  that can contribute to the development of bowel cancer, and that gives us an opportunity to begin assessing people for their future risk. If we can identify people who are at a strongly increased risk, through genetic and lifestyle factors, we can begin to give them targeted health messages, aimed at helping them make choices that could prevent the disease.”

My guests next Saturday, Dr Gil Kajiki is the founder of the Valley Thyroid Institute. He graduated from the Pasadena College of Chiropractic and has been a chiropractor for 30 years. The main focus of his practice is thyroid and Auto Immune conditions.

Can A Healthy Lifestyle Reduce Risk for High Risk Breast Cancer Patients.

A new study published in May, 2016 in JAMA Oncology  concluded that women with a high risk of developing breast cancer based upon family history and genetic risk can reduce the chances of developing the disease by following a healthy lifestyle. Researchers developed a model predicting the risk of breast cancer by analyzing records of more than 17,000 women with breast cancer and nearly 20,000 women without the disease and another 6,000 women from another study group. Individual-level data on risk such as age, weight, smoking status, and  factors on almost 100 common gene variations, each of which are known to have a modest association with breast cancer but in combination they can lead to substantial elevated risk. The common gene variations in the study were quite different from the well known rare mutations in genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 where having a single variant can mean a very high risk of developing cancer.

They found that roughly 30 percent of breast cancer cases could be prevented by modifying known risk factors such as drinking less alcohol, losing weight and not taking hormone replacement therapy. They also found that a large fraction of the total preventable cases would occur among women at higher levels because of genetic risk factors, family history and a few other factors that cannot be modified. They found that white women who are at high risk but who had a low body index mass index, who did not drink or smoke, and who did not use hormone replacement therapy, had about the same risk as an average white woman in the United States and that the average chance that a 30 year old white woman will develop breast cancer before age 80 is about 11 percent. Researchers said “People think that their genetic risk for developing cancer is set in stone,. While you can’t change your genes, this study tells us even people who are at high genetic risk can change their health outlook by making better lifestyle choices such as eating right, exercises, and quitting smoking.”

This study is a first step in understanding how advances in the field of genetics can be used to develop preventive strategies to help women improve their odds of avoiding breast cancer.
